The celebrated 'Vader Restomod', painstakingly finished and fitted with an Exon Racing C20XE 285bhp engine mated to a Quaife sequential gearbox following a project that cost c.£200,000. If you’re reading this listing it’s highly likely that you are the sort of person who nods appreciatively at a passing classic, regardless of the badge, because above all, we are enthusiasts. We all remember the first car that made us smile, perhaps your dad’s car or maybe a shiny MG or Austin-Healey that passed you every morning whilst standing at the bus stop as a 14 year old on the way to school. The remarkable motor car on offer here owes its very existence to that level of nostalgia, generated from a 15 year old’s first experience of going fast in a road-rally prepared Chevette back in the day. With later success came the sports cars that one expects to see in an enthusiast’s garage and yet that memory lingered - could that first experience be recreated? With a healthy budget and some firm ideas, that formative memory grew into a compulsion to create something very special. No ordinary undertaking and with only a handful of specialist workshops with proven experience of combining precision engineering and design flair, the talented team at Retropower Ltd of Leicestershire were duly commissioned. Not many workshops would be brave enough to 'resto mod' a car for Gordon Murray, one of the world’s leading automotive designers, however they had been tasked with that project and he was delighted, declaring his Mk1 Escort 'A masterpiece of functionality and classic understatement…the car is more than I’d ever hoped for'.However, understatement was clearly missing in the brief for 'Project Vader' and the photographic record of the 18 month transformation of a rather tired hatch-backed 1983 Vauxhall Chevette L in faded yellow to the spectacular one off motorcar we see today is breathtaking. The Chevette HSR enjoyed much success in 'Group 4' rallying in the past and its distinctive looks with a wide rear end tapering to a slightly narrower front was much admired, however 'Project Vader' was never intended to be some half-baked rally homage, but a new car with performance to match its looks. The record of works is exhaustive and we’ll therefore highlight the key points that make this car unlike any other. Happily, motoring journalist Jonny Smith interviewed Callum Seviour of Retropower about the build and Jonny’s subsequent road test is a joy to watch on his YouTube channel, The Late Brake Show.Taken back to its bare shell which was then braced, the gearbox and axle tunnels were enlarged to house the upgraded mechanicals whilst the car was fitted with a triangulated cage and the extra wide GRP body kit was extensively refinished for the perfect fit. One of Paul Exon’s highly rated C20XE Redtop engines, rated at 265bhp at the flywheel, was then mated to a Quaife 6-speed sequential gearbox. The interior speaks for itself; the carbon fibre trim, push button controls and digital display has more than a hint of Knightrider. The attention to detail is exquisite, from the raised Vader badge at the rear to the subtly re-finished period Vauxhall emblem on the bonnet. The odometer currently reads some 42,000 miles which is largely immaterial in what is essentially a new car. The project took 18 months with an investment of close to £200,000 and the spectacular result is unquestionably unique in the proper sense of the word.Further technical and specification to follow.Specification Make: VAUXHALL Model: CHEVETTE Year: 1983 Chassis Number: M3DE137944 Registration Number: GKX 99Y Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 42000 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images

Lot 648

Rare GT Junior from the last year of production in a great colour, much enjoyed during 18 years long term ownership and recently refreshed. Alfa Romeo 105/115 Series Coupés were built from 1963 until 1977 and were the successors to the celebrated Giulietta Sprint Coupé, utilising the shortened floorpan from the Giulia saloon car. The basic body shape, shared by all models, was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone as one of his first major projects and is regarded as one of his finest commercial efforts. The balance of glass and metal, the influence of the front and rear screens on the shape of the cabin and the flat grille with incorporated headlamps were all considered groundbreaking styling features of the era. Apart from their good looks, these cars are often considered as some of the best handling classic saloons and with a 5-speed gearbox, all round disc brakes, independent suspension and torquey engine, they were very advanced for the time and have the capability to embarrass many of their modern counterparts.First registered in 1977 and one of the last examples to be registered in the UK, this particular 1600 Junior was comprehensively restored in 2012 and has been used and enjoyed by the present owner since 2006, some 18 years. For much of that time it's been used as a daily driver and needed to be 'on the button' and ready to go when and wherever required, so further in-depth recommissioning was carried out in 2022 to keep ahead of any deterioration.Presenting superbly, this matching numbers Junior is finished in Blu Olandese (323) with a contrasting tan hide interior and we are told is in excellent condition throughout both bodily and mechanically with a detailed pre-sale check to be carried out prior to being offered at Race Retro. With an original ‘on the road’ figure of £3,517, a not inconsiderable sum at the time, these vehicles attracted dedicated buyers, an ethos which has continued over the years with this particular example having had just four custodians in total, all of which have clearly maintained the little Alfa as required with invoices from respected specialists including Ian Ellis Alfa and Fostering Classics featuring in the car's comprehensive history file. Alongside the original stamped service book there are numerous tax discs, previous MOT certificates and two framed Alfa Romeo Owners Club Concours awards from the 1990’s.The GT 1600 Junior had the lowest production of the Tipo 105 Series Coupés and when combined with being one of the last few UK cars and finished in an unusual colour, this is a rare car. A perfect opportunity to take custody of one of the most handsome 2+2 Coupés of the 1970s that will provide ‘classic’ family motoring for years to come. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged.Specification Make: ALFA ROMEO Model: 1600 JUNIOR Year: 1977 Chassis Number: 0001721 Registration Number: XBT 49R Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBC Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 116798 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Tan HideClick here for more details and images

Lot 509

A beautifully prepared example of the earliest Morris Minor model currently racing, with Goodwood provenance and welcome anywhere. The ubiquitous Morris Minor arrived in September 1948 as the 918cc side-vale powered ‘Series MM’ and was replaced by a restyled car in September 1950. They have become known by Minor enthusiasts as the ‘Low Light’ and ‘High Light’ respectively.Originally supplied by W Watson and Co, Liverpool in July 1949 as a 'Low Light', this well known Goodwood participant is offered fresh to market by its fastidious owner after it being in his care for the past 12 years, during which time its long standing employment as an historic race car, some 30 years to date, has been continued and enjoyed to the maximum.Well known within the world of Historic Motorsport, SSK 888 is probably best know to the public through its exploits at the Goodwood Revival where it’s been invited five times and raced in the St Marys Trophy, in 2008 driven by the owner and Brian Redman, in 2014 shared with Tony Jardine, in 2017 and 2019 with Rauno Aaltonon and most recently our vendor shared the car with Richard (Dickie) Attwood in the 2021 St Mary's Trophy. Four outings in the Donington Historic yielded a seventh overall in 2019 and the car finished a splendid fourth overall in the 2022 Sopwith Cup at the Goodwood Members Meeting. However, whilst Goodwood has possibly been its pinnacle, it has also been a regular contender in HRDC Touring Greats, the HRDC Jack Sears Trophy and All Stars Series, BARC Oldies but Goldies, the Classic Saloon Car Championship and more besides and with the St Marys Trophy on the running order once again at this years Goodwood Revival there is the possibility of a further appearance at one of the most prestigious motorsport events ever conceived. The list of this venerable Minor's many Class Wins and podiums is too long to cover here and a substantial amount of further information about the car's decades of motor racing history is contained in the car’s history file which can be inspected at our Documents Desk at Race Retro or can be emailed to interested parties.Similarly, the car’s mechanical specification and developments over the years are listed on several pages and can be forwarded to potential buyers.Key Info;Car completely rebuilt in 2008 by IK Classics2017/2022 New full-race 1,293cc engine. Lot 511

Superbly restored with in-date FIA/HTP papers and huge scope for worldwide competitive racing. The Lotus 22 Formula Junior was a further development of the Type 20 with a stiffer tubular frame made of thicker metal and other stabilising chassis elements. The front suspension was essentially unchanged, while the rear suspension followed the concept of the 1961 Lotus 21 Formula 1 car, so that the Lotus 22 no longer used the driveshafts as overhead suspension points, but instead added overhead camber links. The track had been widened slightly compared to the Type 20, externally mounted Girling disc brakes were fitted all around and the car sat on 13" wheels front and rear. The 1.1-litre Ford Cosworth engine, now with dry sump lubrication and at that time already guaranteed 100bhp, was installed at an angle of 30° to the right in order to make the body more aerodynamic at the rear and to lower the centre of gravity. The Type 22 was also delivered from the factory with 4-speed gearboxes based on Renault or VW transmissions.22-J-52 is one of the 77 original Lotus 22s and #8 of the ten originally purchased and owned by Jim Russell for use at his race school at Snetterton. Unique in its day, the legendary race school ran for five days a week and played a pivotal part in the development of many young drivers including Emerson Fittiipaldi, Derek Bell, Danny Sullivan, Tiff Needell, Teddy Pilette, Nando Parrado and Jacques Villeneuve. In 1985, once it served its time in the UK, the car was sold into Italy by Ken Booth to Allessandra Ripamonti who raced it extensively at Monza, Imola and the Nürburgring from 1992 through to 2007. Our vendor purchased the car in 2013 from Italy, embarking on a two year home restoration including an engine and gearbox rebuild, chassis work/straightening, new petrol and oil tanks, new wiring and wheel bearings. Since completion, the car has been raced in anger only a handful of times, with its last major outing being the Silverstone International in 2018.It's supplied with spare suspension, a large selection of Hewland gears, its history file containing old racing results and invoices for parts and the current FIA/HTP papers valid until 2028.The car is being offered by our vendor under the sad circumstances that medical reasons prevent him from racing any more and it is time to move the car on to its next custodian. As a fully restored Formula Junior with every detail attended to ensuring its authentic Lotus Heritage, this 22 seems remarkable value at today's estimate. Finished in Carnival Red it presents really well, starting and driving on the button and ready to offer its new owner many seasons of competitive racing. Having spent many years at Jim Russel's race school, #22-J-52 is bound to have been driven by someone who went on to become a household name and the research could be fun.Specification Make: LOTUS Model: 22 Year: 1963 Chassis Number: 22-J-52 Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBC Make: Interior Colour: GreenClick here for more details and images
