Nicholson had an undistinguished career losing his first command whilst commanding Virginia, on his orders she tried to run past the British squadron blockading the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, running the Viginia aground, Nicholson chose to flee to shore rather than fight leaving the crew to be captured, he reported to the Congress that his flight was an `escape`.
