A Scottish flintlock belt pistol made entirely of steel, by Jo. Murdoch, Doune,circa 1780-90 with three-stage barrel formed with a flared octagonal muzzle cut with an alternating pattern, fluted breech, and engraved with characteristic arrangements of scrolling foliage over the median, signed bevelled lock engraved en suite with the barrel (sear incomplete) and the cock incorporating a pierced rosette below the comb, profusely engraved stock inlaid with three silver bands below the lock, 'rams-horn' butt decorated with inlaid silver interlace over the length of the spine and inset with a silver oval left and right, each engraved with the owner's monogram IB, fitted with engraved steel belt hook with pierced finial, silver button trigger and pricker each pricked and engraved as a flowerhead ( the pricker dented), and retaining its original moulded steel ramrod ( small rust patches throughout) 32cm., 12.625in
