The XL1's efficiency is already legendary: in windless conditions it needs just 8bhp to maintain a steady 62mph and it can return up to 313mpg. And yet if you were to deploy all available power it would hit 125mph, although for now it's governed at 100mph.' – Autocar. As every automotive engineer knows, the two best ways of improving fuel economy are to reduce weight and lower aerodynamic drag, and nowhere is this two-pronged approach better exemplified than in Volkswagen's XL1. Of course, it also helps if the vehicle in question is, at least partly, driven by an electric motor. VW's concept of a 'Super Efficient Vehicle' (SEV) first appeared in concept car form in 2002. A small two-seater, the car featured tandem seating and an aircraft-style canopy, while placing the rear wheels closely together enabled the designers to achieve the desired low-drag 'teardrop' shape; indeed, at 0.159 the drag coefficient was remarkably low when compared to the industry average of between 0.3 and 0.4. Lightweight carbon fibre body panels clad a magnesium-alloy sub-frame, and every component in the drive train was designed with weight saving in mind. Power was supplied by a 299cc 8.4bhp single-cylinder diesel engine driving via a six-speed transmission. The next stage of development was the L1 of 2009, which was powered an 800cc twin-cylinder diesel engine and a 13.4bhp electric motor. This diesel/electric combination was retained for the successor XL1 plug-in hybrid, unveiled at the 2011 Qatar Motor Show, although the twin-cylinder engine was now turbocharged and the transmission a seven-speed DCT design. Seating was now staggered rather than tandem, while access was gained via 'butterfly' doors. Unlike the previous prototypes, the XL1 was destined for limited production with a total of 250 being built, most of which were completed in 2014. The XL1 offered here resembles the 2013 Geneva Motor Show car, owned by Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piech, which is one of the very few ever in 'Sunset Red' metallic. Ordered new by Mr. Kempen in Germany in July 2014, the chassis number suggests it is the 59th built. Extremely rare in 'Sunset Red' over black/ceramic Alcantara interior, the car was first registered on 19th January 2015 and has covered a mere 405 kilometres from new. Fascinated by the XL1's style and design, the current owner added the car to his collection in 2019 but has not driven it. A guaranteed future collectible, the XL1 is in excellent condition throughout as one would expect of such a little-used example. The car comes with German registration documents, a Certificate of Conformity and the personalized XL1 'chassis 059' binder from the factory. Please note this lot will be subject to additional VAT on the hammer price.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: †† The prevailing rate of TVA at the time of going to press is 20% but this is subject to government change and the rate payable will be the rate in force on the date of the Sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
