II, n°1445, p. 199) À travers près d’une centaine d’oeuvres, amateurs, collectionneurs et bibliophiles pourront parcourir trente années de la carrière artistique de Jean Dubuffet, qui su redonner à la technique de la lithographie toutes ses lettres de noblesse et en faire un véritable champs d’investigations de recherches esthétiques. Dès 1944, Dubuffet décida d’exposer son OEuvre de lithographe aux côtés de tableaux peints, marquant ainsi toute l’importance qu’il attachait à cette technique. A cette date, il va se faire le chantre de l’illustration de texte comme il le montre avec l’oeuvre de Francis Ponge, Matières et Mémoires (lot 1 et 2) ou le recueil de poèmes de Guilevic intitulé Murs (lot 3 à 6). Mais surtout, Dubuffet va s’employer à travailler sur la pierre lithographique elle-même(lot 9 à 15) plutôt qu’à l’image qu’elle peut produire et ceci, comme le dit Daniel Abadie, « avec sauvagerie ». Il va alors faire subir au support, lisse et aux grains fins, différents accidents pour créer des effets de matières et des nuances tout à fait novateur. Entre 1958 et 1962, Dubuffet produisit pas moins de trois cent soixante deux lithographie en noir et en couleurs pour donner naissance à l’extraordinaire série des Phénomènes (lot 16 à 95), où le geste de l’artiste disparait au profit des hasards crées par le mélange de l’encre avec de la poussière de l’atelier, des végétaux ou encore de petits débris jetés sur la pierre. Dubuffet se voulait ainsi, comme le dit Daniel Abadie, « simple révélateur d’un monde ignoré et immédiat ». Les titres qu’il donne à chacun de ses oeuvres abondent dans ce sens où s’y mêlent à la fois simplicité, onirisme et quotidien (Boulevard, Secret, L’écriture de le l’ombre….) Cet effacement de la main de l’artiste va trouver un écho encore plus grand au début des années 70 lorsque Dubuffet va faire le choix de recourir à des techniques purement industrielles comme la sérigraphie (lot 101 à 105), véritable délégation du geste artistique à des machines dépourvues de toute sensibilité. Citons cette phrase de Noël Arnaud à propos de l’OEuvre lithographique de Dubuffet qui résument parfaitement l’ensemble des compositions présentées dans ce catalogue : « Ces planches expriment le sol, la terre qui furent leur vocation initiale, et l’eau dans ses remuements ou sa stagnation, la poussière errante et le coeur de l’ombre et jusqu’au vide, et les formes larvaires qui dans tous ces mondes éclosent et grouillent ».
