Lord French holding a jug inscribed 'French pour les Francais'. World War I Political and Military Toby Jug designed by Sir Francis Carruthers Gould from the set of eleven crafted between 1915 and 1920 by Wilkinson Ltd and retailed by Soane & Smith, 462 Oxford Street, London. Highly coloured decoration and gilt, the underside printed with marks and facsimile signature. Complete with original 1915 printed Soane & Smith certificate with "Major J. Clementi 9/1/17" handwritten to the reverse. Height 25.4cm Provenance: From the family of Major J. Clementi OBE 1878-1943, Grandson of the composer Muzio Clementi. Major Clementi served in India and Afghanistan. The complete collection of these Toby jugs should include eleven jugs however the Major and Mrs. Clementi were sailing to India at the time and despite purchasing the complete set, never collected the missing two designs of General Botha and George V. Condition Report: Quite good condition, crack to top of jug (small amount missing), ceramic underneath, no restoration, a few tiny missing flakes of glaze.
A pair of rare Victorian Staffordshire recumbent spaniels. Length 19.5cm. Condition Report: 1st of the pair has a firing crack above the back leg, slight chips to black paint and the gilt is very rubbed. 2nd of the pair is missing ceramic to right eye, has slight chips to black paint and the gilt is slightly rubbed.
