Final between West Ham United and Arsenal.' Note: After lengthy contract negotiations, Portmeirion were given permission by F.A. secretary Ted Croker to produce these replicas in 1979. The modeller, Fred Hackney, inspected the trophy at Highbury, Arsenal, them being the holders at the time. He made a series of detailed measurements to replicate it faithfully. Unfortunately the production costs of such an impressive piece, including the use of a platinum glaze, proved prohibitive ro the manufacturer and the replica never went into full commercial production. One of his major influnces was Salvatore Fiume, a sculptor and painter who strongly impacted his style of dynamic and assymetric forms. Most of Meli's works are plates or jugs but his technique of constructing as opposed to throwing his pottery allowed him to create much larger scale items, such as the glazed earthenware table. Meli participated in international exhibitions across Europe, Asia and North America throughout his career, most notably the Milan Triennale and the Venice Bienale. He was named the "enfant terrible of Italian Ceramic art"
§ Dora Holzhandler (British, 1928-2015), a collection of five ceramic chargers, comprising; Lovers, signed and dated 1999, 36cm (14in), Lovers, signed and dated 2001, 40cm (15.75in), Mother & Child in Winter, signed and dated 2001, 39cm (15.25in), Mother & child in spring, signed and dated 2004, 41cm (16in) and The Flower Seller, signed and dated 2004, 41cm (16in) (5) Other Notes: Born in Paris to Jewish-Polish parents, Dora Holzhandler moved to Britain with her family at the age of six. Influenced by her belief in both Jewish and Buddhist religions, Holzhandler often portrayed intimate scenes, such as embracing lovers or mother and child, and imbued them with mystical and religious symbolism. Her work possesses a naivety and innate innocence, contrasting with her own early personal experiences. Her first exhibition was hosted by the gallerist, Helen Lessore in 1954.
Helen König Scavini (1886-1974) & Mario Sturani (1906-1978) for Lenci, a rare 'Nudo Sul Mondo' earthenware figure, modelled as a young female nude seated beside a small dog on top of a globe, signed to the underside 'Lenci, Torino, 9-1936-XIV, Made in Italy' 50cm (20in) Literature: Similar example illustrated: Lenci, Archivi di Arti Decorative, Torino, 1992, p. 204, fig. 607 Other Notes: A similar example was sold at Christie's Design Sale, London, 3 November 2015, Lot 148, sold for £20,000 The Italian brand Lenci was founded in 1919 in Turin by Enrico Scavini and his wife, Helen Konig - originally making beautifully crafted felt dolls. After successfully exhibiting the dolls across Europe in the early 1920's, an increase in competition from cheaper manufacturers soon saw sales decline. The company then diversified into ceramics, unveiling their stylish figures at the International exhibition in Turin, 1928 to favourable reviews. The studio then began to collaborate with notable artists and sculptors, including Sandro Vecchietti, Giovanni Grande and Mario Sturani. Lenci ceramic figurines embody the Art Deco style of the time; many were designed by Helen Konig herself, effortlessly capturing the sensuality of the female form while evoking the fashions published in Vogue magazine. Nudity was extremely popular during the 1920's & 1930's and Konig's nude creations were especially successful. Lenci studio designers began incorporating the nudes into their designs in an array of different poses, but all retaining the slender, feminine physique typical of Konig's figurines and of the era. In very good condition.
