A LARGE CHINESE KIANGNAN PEAR-SHAPED VASE with a long neck, covered in a creamy 'ostrich egg' glaze with fine crackles, one side with a subtle foliate pattern, Ming, 20.5" (52cm) high Provenance: Bluett & Sons, London 1940. J.C. Thomson Collection. Private collection, South Wales. So-called Kiangnan Ting 'ostrich egg' glazed vases of this type were highly sought after by collectors in the mid-20th century. Sir William Burrell acquired a piece from Bluetts in 1943 which is now in the Glasgow collections. Lord Cunliffe also bought one from Bluetts for £75 in 1947 which was exhibited at the 1948 OCS Exhibition (no. 140). For published examples see A.L. Hetherington "The Early Ceramic Wares of China", 1922 pl.22; and Hobson and Hetherington "The Art of the Chinese Potter", 1923, pl.61.

A set of four 20th century Chinese ceramic plaques, each painted in underglaze blue with a figure and with verses of character mark scripts with seal mark, 39 x 11.5cm, framed. CONDITION REPORT: Good condition, no major damage noted. One has a dirty line mark on base (men with cup).

A 20th century Chinese ceramic figure of a monkey seated on a rock, carrying a large token, a peach, a button hook and a bat on its back, impressed seal mark to the side of the base, height 27cm and a porcelain figure of a seated smiling Buddha wrapped in his gown with crackle glaze, two impressed character seal marks to base, height 10cm (2).

A c.1930s Chinese ceramic figure of a seated woman playing ruan, her robes with turquoise painted crackle glaze and with floral decorated borders, impressed seal marks to the inside of the base, height 45.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: There are some losses to the flowers adorning the woman's head.

Lot 910

A group of six various Chinese ceramic bitong vases/brush pots, including a hexagonal Republic style example depicting boys playing in a garden, height 12cm, a cylindrical crackle glazed example painted in enamels with dragons amongst clouds, height 11cm, a Canton example (af) and a Famille Noir example, height 12.5cm (6). CONDITION REPORT: Canton brush pot has a crack spreading from the edge of the rim, approx 8cm, rubbing to some parts of the enamel, the crackle glaze base also has five small hairlines to the edge of the rim and some rubbing to the surface. The Republic style pot has a single crack. The other vases have some manufacturing imperfections. Peach coloured example has a chip to the base. Yellow transfer decorated example has wear and dirt to the edge of the base. Famille Noir is in a similar condition with some surface dirt.

An Edwardian oak smoker's cabinet with a pair of glazed doors enclosing a formation of three drawers above a compartment and two smaller drawers with a pipe rack and ceramic tobacco pot above, with Art Nouveau style brass handles, 48 x 21 x 41cm.

Lot 1845

A decorative porcelain vase of square tapering form with canted corners overall painted and gilt heightened with floral motifs, the fittings inscribed "Hinks & Son's Patent", on ornamental shaped square brass base, height 42cm, and a further decorative glass example of baluster form (2). CONDITION REPORT: Both in good condition. Glass lamp has scuff to lower section and chrome rubbed away to top section. Ceramic lamp has rubbed areas to the gilding.

Lot 164

Lucie Rie (British, 1902-1995) for Bimini Eight pressed glass buttons seven with Bimini brass backs impressed flowerpot mark the largest 3.4cm across (8). Provenance: Lucie Rie confirmed verbally to the vendor's mother that she had designed and pressed these buttons. Before the war the Bimini workshops in Vienna had designed and made blown glass and furniture. Fritz Lampl, one of the trade partners, moved to London, became a button-maker to the fashion trade, and taught a number of other refugees, including Lucie Rie, to press glass buttons. In 1945 she began to design and make ceramic buttons for this new Bimini in her workshop.
