A dynamic pair of ceramic polo-player figures each a galloping horse with legs extended and mane flying, painted harness and bridle detailing, bearing a female rider; one in green floral robe with right arm bent before the body and left hand trailing, the other in dark blue floral robe with right arm bent behind the body; each with custom-made stand. A ceramic rhyton with bulbous body, short waisted neck with everted rim, painted geometric frieze to the shoulder, the finial formed as a stylised bull's head with curved horns and bulbous eyes. 840 grams, 23cm (9"). Property of a London gentleman; previously with central London gallery; acquired in the 1960s. Fine condition, horns repaired.
South Italian, Apulia, 320-300 BC. A ceramic pyxis of spherical form with small stepped foot and chamfered button handle; the base with reserved palmettes on a black field and white pellets; the lid with palmettes between two profile heads of ladies of fashion, Side A with stephane necklace and earrings, the hair bound with a decorated cloth(?) to the rear; Side B with dark hair dressed in a chignon with pearls to the taenia restraining ribbons, with stephane necklace and earrings; lotus flower motif to the shoulder. A figural jar with ceramic (frit) body painted in black under a turquoise glaze; a male in thigh-length robe and knee-length trousers clasping his hands to his abdomen while stepping forwards; decorative scrolls to the shoulders and chest, geometric band to the cap, face modelled in high relief. 442 grams, 25cm (10").
