The Sir Reginald James Bowker Archive Part I British Diplomat and Ambassador, born the second son of Edith Elliot (step-daughter of Maj. Gen. Knowles) and F.J. Bowker (later Lt. Col. of 4th Batt. Hampshire Regiment). His father was killed during WWI whilst fighting the Turks in Mesopotamia, his mother later married John Nicholl, also a diplomat. Following his education, including Heidelberg University, he joined the Foreign Office in 1925, retiring in 1961, following a career that took him to Paris, Olso, Berlin, Madrid (during WWI), Rangoon, Constantinople, Cairo and Vienna. He was Britain`s last High Commissioner and first Ambassador to Burma (1947-1950), seen as a capable pair of hands to cover a possibly difficult Independence transfer, despite his reputation as a Middle East expert. After a period at the F.O. as an advisor on Middle East policy, he completed his career as Ambassador to Austria, receiving the Knight`s Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire on his retirement.
