The cult was a secret one that involved initiation and was concerned with purification, the revelation of sacred objects and words and the belief in the rebirth of the soul as exemplified by the return of life in Spring. At the site of Eleusis a crack in the earth marked the spot where Hades carried Persephone to the underworld and it was at this spot that devotees would sacrifice pigs or leave ceramic models of pigs as an offering.
