TRE GRANDI “GIARE DA ZENZERO” ESAGONALI Cina, fornaci di Shiwan (Guangdong), XVIII-XX secolo - THREE LARGE HEXAGONAL “GINGER JARS” Grès grezzo prodotto e decorato a stampo con invetriatura spessa e lucida. Altezza 15 cm circa Fabbricate in gran quantità nelle fornaci nelle vicinanze di Canton (Guangzhou), questa tipologia di giare era destinata alla conservazione non soltanto dello zenzero ma anche di molti altri alimenti, come le spezie, il riso, le verdure in salamoia. Pur essendo prodotti di massa, venivano tutte abbellite con decorazioni impresse a stampo e invetriate, prima di essere stipate nei forni, accatastate l'una sull'altra. I soggetti possono essere molteplici, sui piccoli pannelli si riconoscono paesaggi con pagode e padiglioni, fiori e frutti, poesie e motti, animali. Le decorazioni sono ricoperte di un'invetriatura spessa e vetrosa, nelle tonalità del verde, che vira al rosso se durante la cottura si è creata accidentalmente un'atmosfera povera d'ossigeno. Le giare erano sigillate con tappi in sughero, talora anche con coperchi in ceramica. - China, Shiwan kilns (Guangdong), 18th-20th Century In rough stoneware produced and decorated in the mould with thick, glossy glaze. Height 5.90 in. approximately Fabricated in large quantities in the kilns near Canton (Guangzhou), this type of jar was used to preserve not only ginger, but also many other foodstuffs, like spices, rise, and pickled vegetables. Although mass produced, they were embellished with moulded decorations under the glaze. There are various patterns moulded on the small panels, landscapes with pagodas and pavilions, flowers and fruit, poetry and adages, animals. The decorations are covered with a thick and glassy glaze in the shades of green, which may turn red when fired accidentally in a reducing atmosphere. The jars were sealed with cork stoppers, or sometimes with ceramic lids. € 250

COPPIA DI INCENSIERI A FORMA DI LEONE BUDDHISTA (SHISHI) - A PAIR OF BUDDHIST LION (SHISHI) INCENSE BURNERS China, Qing dynasty, 18th-19th century Cina, dinastia Qing, XVIII-XIX sec. Ceramica prodotta a stampo con pittura policroma sopracoperta. Il leone dal corpo in verde smeraldo presenta una rottura restaurata del portaincenso; mentre quello dal corpo in verde mela presenta una rottura restaurata della testa e della parte superiore del portaincenso. Piccola crepa alla base. Altezza 23,3 cm I leoni buddhisti, detti anche "cani di Fo", appaiono spesso in coppia: il maschio con una sfera o una perla sotto la zampa, a simboleggiare la forza e la potenza dell'impero cinese. La femmina con un cucciolo di leone sotto la zampa, ad indicare la discendenza, la crescita e il benessere. - Moulded ceramic with polychrome painting over the glaze. The lion with an emerald green body has restored breakage of the incense holder, while the one with the apple green body has restored breakage of the upper part of the incense holder. The Buddhist lions, also called “Foo dogs”, often appear in pairs: the male with a pearl or a sphere under one paw to symbolise the strength and power of the Chinese empire.
