A tea service in dark blue, cream and orange glazed ceramic with gold highlights comprising: tea pot and lid, milk jug, hot water jug with hinged metal lid; hexagonal stand; maker's name 'Lingard' in script to the underside of the water jug, '48' and 'H' beneath, '48' beneath milk jug. Ex Steinberg collection; acquired London art market, 1960s-1970s. Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Tang Dynasty, 618-906 AD. A hollow-formed ceramic figurine of a soldier in hood and armoured coat with right hand to the chest to accept a model spear; traces of red and white pigment. Ex M D O’Hara collection of Chinese figurines; formed 1980s. During the Tang dynasty burials were constructed and furnished in accordance with restrictive sumptuary regulations that dictated the kind of tomb and quality of grave goods. It was only natural that families of noble rank would wish to copy the Imperial family, both in this life and the next, and so many of them had tomb figures made that would act as servants in the next life and which copied the larger, and more elaborate examples, found in Imperial tombs, though on a lesser scale. 1.6 kg, 29.5cm (11 1/2"). Fine condition.
