† PHILIP HARDAKER (born 1954); 'Dodo', a large earthenware dish covered in cobalt and white glaze decorated with cameos of heads and faces, the largest cameo being a dodo, incised title and other marks dated 1994, diameter 42.5cm.Hardaker describes himself as 'an accumulator, a shifter of detritus collecting the flotsam and jetsam of our wasteful consumer society and transforming these materials into art. He represents his work as archaeological sculptural paintings made from clay and found objects. For thirty years he has been digging up ancient and modern ceramic shards from Staffordshire and around the world. He employs these fragments of past ages along with his own modelled and cast ceramic elements of heads, animals and aeroplanes in ceramic collages of considerable intricacy and beauty. Hardaker's work has political and ecological objectives and concerns in communicating comment on historical events. The work is also intrinsically linked with being English and celebrating the past production of Staffordshire ceramics and creativity.'Condition Report: Firing crack through foot ring and dodo cameo, minor nick to rim, otherwise appears good with no further signs of faults, damage or restorations.

Glazed and gilded ceramic. Dimensions: 56 x 49 x 28 cm. This imposing centrepiece, supported by two winged sphinxes, combines neoclassical elements with Egyptian-inspired decoration. The gilded details and blue decoration enhance the monumental character of the piece, which would have occupied a central place on the tables of banquets or luxury exhibitions. Sphinxes, symbols of strength and wisdom, add a touch of exoticism, very much in vogue in early 20th-century decoration.
