A Parian Porcelain Figure of Musidora, after William Theed, Copeland 1867, for the Ceramic and Crystal Palace Art Union 1866, impressed marks and title, 44cm high This is the companion figure to Malempré`s shepherd boy, and is based on the marble statue executed in 1866 for the Prince of Wales, exhibited at the 1866 RA, and placed in Marlborough House, London. Musidora is a water nymph featured in James Thompson`s The Seasons (1730) who was loved by Damon, a young swane. From a copse he sees her bathing and writes the following lines in sand on the river bank: Bathe on, my fair, - yet unbeheld save by the second I, of a fateful love; I go to guard thy haunt, to keep from thy recess each vagrant foot and each licentious eye For a similar figure see The Parian Phenomenon, edited by Paul Atterbury, published by Richard Dennis, page 153, illus 518
