An exceptional mid Victorian walnut centre table, attributed to Henry Eyles, Bath, the burr quarter veneered top centred by a cartouche shaped marquetry panel depicting a basket of flowers against a black background, the sloping boxwood frieze carved in relief with sixteen oval panels depicting the ‘Ages of Man’ and ‘Adam and Eve expelled from Paradise’, between rope twist mouldings, the underside containing four concealed compartments, on dolphin and floral carved column above shell, swan and scroll carved tripartite base, with three downswept fluted and acanthus scroll carved legs fitted with ceramic castors 160cm diameter, 74cm high Note: A similar table by Henry Eyles was exhibited at The Great Exhibition of 1851and is now at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It may be that the edge carving was carried out by his relation George Eyles, woodcarver of Claverton Street in Bath. The elaborate carving and decoration to the table may indicate thet it also was specifically produced as an exhibitionpiece.
