Provenance: Japanese Ceramics from the Collection of Sir Cornelius Van Horne (lots 28-30) Sir William Cornelius Van Horne (1843-1915), president of Canadian Pacific Railway and Honourary Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.C), was an avid art collector and one of Montreal’s most significant pre-war collections, which also included Asian works of art. Van Horne had a particular fondness for Japanese porcelain and kept meticulous records of his collection, assigning specific inventory numbers to the majority of his items. Following his death, most of Van Horne’s Asian pottery was bequeathed to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. Years later, after the passing of his wife Lady van Horne, a portion of the collection was donated to the Montreal Museum of Fine Art. Cornelius Van Horne Collection no. 1754. Starting Price: $200

Important COFFRE en cèdre du Japon à décor de laque or sur fond noir du Dit du Genji, des Huit vues d’Ômi, et du Dit des Frères Soga.Le décor de laque manifeste, sur près de 9 m², la perfection des principales techniques combinées du maki-e (art de la laque), notamment : roiro-urushi (fond de laque noir), fun dame (fond d`or), hiramaki-e (dessin à la poudre d`or), takamaki-e (dessin en relief saupoudré d`or), harigari et tsukegaki (lignes de dessins à l`or en creux ou en relief), kanagai (feuille d`or en haut-relief), kirikane (carré de feuilles d`or en mosaïque), hanagai (incrustations de nacre), ginbyo (clous d`argent), incrustations d`argent en cascades, nashiji (fond de poire, dit aventurine).Chaque panneau extérieur du coffre est entouré d`une frise géométrique à trois bandes au centre de laquelle se répètent trois môns (symboles héraldiques japonais), alternant fleur de Magnolias, fleur à six pétales et roue du Dharma et fleur de lotus à huit branches, symbole de la doctrine bouddhiste. Les bords du couvercle et du fond sont décorés à l’imitation du bois.• LE DIT DU GENJI. Le panneau frontal est orné de 36 personnages et de nombreux animaux (canards, poules, chien) illustrant une scène du chapitre 28, dit Nowaki : la Tempête. Après l’orage, les femmes et les jeunes servantes ramassent les fleurs coupées et des insectes qu’ils recueillent dans des boîtes rondes. Scènes de palais et de jardins alternent dans une architecture merveilleuse pêche à la ligne autour d’un bassin, basse-cour, cerfsvolants,rencontres... Premier roman de la littérature mondiale, au XIe siècle, le Dit du Genji narre en 54 livres la vie de cour à travers les aventures et les amours de Genji, un prince impérial d’une incroyable beauté.• LES HUIT VUES D’ÔMI : le temple d’Ishiyama. Le dessus du couvercle est orné de 21 personnages et d’animaux de basse-cour évoluant dans le temple montagneux d’Ishiyama Dera. Ce temple est celui où la poétesse Murasaki Shikibu, au XIe siècle, a entamé la rédaction du Dit du Genji. Une cascade spectaculaire, avec incrustations de métal sur 14 cm, coule sur les bords du lac Biwa. Deux barques, sous un pont au pied d’une pagode, évoluent au milieu des vagues. La scène prend place dans un cartouche formé de quatre paires de phénix sur fond noir.• LE DIT DES FRÈRES SOGA. L`intérieur du couvercle est orné de 29 personnages illustrant la scène de chasse du Dit des Frères Soga. C’est au cours de cette chasse que les Frères Soga tuent le meurtrier de leur père, s’attirant l’admiration de l’Empereur mais les foudres de la justice. Cette scène saisit de nombreux moments instantanés d’une chasse, avec un sens du majestueux et de l’anecdotique. L`Empereur à cheval, sous un dais, est entouré de huit soldats. Huit cavaliers chassent le cochon sauvage et le cerf au pieu ou à l`arc. Ils sont aidés par une douzaine de chasseurs à pied, dont un enfourche un cochon sauvage. Une multitude d`animaux sauvages - cerfs et biches, sangliers, lapins, belettes et même un singe domestiqué, évolue dans un paysage dominé par le Mont Fuji. La scène prend place dans un cartouche formé par quatre paires de dragons sur un fond de laque aventurine.• OISEAUX ET MAGNOLIAS. Le panneau arrière illustre le style japonais de Kano, ou Sanraku. La frise de môns est simplifiée. Il laisse une grande place au fond de laque noir, en réserve. Il figure trois oiseaux voletant à proximité de deux branches de magnolias. Cette fleur, qui fleurit en mai et juin au Japon, symbolise la saison estivale à laquelle se réfèrent les moments choisis pour illustrer ce coffre.• SCÈNE DE PALAIS. Le panneau latéral gauche est orné de deux personnages dans une scène de jardin et de palais surplombant la mer, une cascade à gauche.• SCÈNE DE JARDIN. Le panneau latéral droit est orné d’un paysage au pont sur un fond vallonné.• FOND DE POIRE. Le fond du coffre est recouvert d`une splendide laque aventurine, dite fond de poire.SERRURE en métal richement ciselée de fleurs de magnolias, gardées par deux tigres et un dragon doré sur fond noir.COINS, charnières et partie centrale du bâti antérieur en cuivre finement ciselé de fleurs de magnolias, anciennement damasquiné. Poignées en acier travaillé et doré sur chaque petit côté sur deux morceaux de cuivre damasquinés.Probablement atelier de Kôami Nagashige (1599-1651), à Kyoto pour la laque.Couvercle attribué au laqueur Goto Kenjo (1588-1663), pour les incrustations de métal.Japon, début de l`ère Édo, vers 1640.Haut. 63,5 Long. 144,5 Prof, 73 cm.Soit environ 8,7 m² de décor laqué, dont 4,87 m² de laque or sur fond noir et environ 3,82 m² de laque aventurine.(Couvercle fendu, restaurations anciennes et repeints d`or, laque ensoleillée et petits manques par endroit).CLEF en acier et bronze à motifs de feuillage. Rookwood vase Standard glaze Fine Rookwood vase, Standard glaze with Beech tree branches, applied silver overlay, executed by Emma Foertmeyer in 1892, #488E, 6"w x 6.5"h, great glaze, beautiful silver A pleasing bulbous shape with detailed silver overlay engraved with floral designs, made and applied by Gorham and carries their logo and R1326. The silver has very minor tarnish and only a couple of minor imperfections under the rim along with some minor surface scratches that are consistent with age and handling. The artist`s, Emma Foertmeyer, intricately painted design makes a bold show of her talent. This vase has minor fine crazing overall and a couple of minor factory glaze imperfections. The base is impressed with the Rookwood logo, date, shape # and artist initials and has sticker residue. The ceramic portion has outstanding color witch highlights the detail of the artwork.
