A RARE MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID BLACK LACQUER RECTANGULAR INCENSE STAND, XIANGJIMing DynastyFinely and elaborately inlaid over the entire exterior surface with shaped pieces and strips of iridescent shell in a variety of shades of pink, white and green, the flat top with three horsemen and foot servants passing though an inscribed gate in front of two pavilions on a willow terrace, all within a broad border of floral cell-pattern, the shaped apron reserved with four large cartouches of an animal amongst flower blooms, the legs with dense vertical coiling leafy flowerhead meanders, the flat base with a lordly crested peacock at the centre of a peony terrace, on a low tiered pierced base, Japanese wood box.66cm (25 7/8in) high x 36cm (15 1/2in) deep x 39.5cm (14 1/4in) wide. Zuonan was founded by Sima Zhong (259-307 AD), the second emperor of the Jin dynasty (265-420 AD). It was situated in Gansu Province, in what was then Jinxing County.The shape of the vessel is clearly based on bronzes of the Eastern Zhou dynasty, see for example a similar archaic bronze dou, illustrated by J.So, Eastern Zhou Ritual Bronzes from the Arthur M.Sackler Collections, New York, 1995, p.191, fig.27.1. However, ceramic vessels inspired by archaic bronzes were also popular in the Warring States period and thereafter. The best horses of the time where those from Ferghana, in Central Asia, which were introduced in Chian during the Han dynasty.
