Brian Tozer (b.1944). Curley, Crow Scout, stoneware clay ceramic tile adhesive, painted wood frame, 163 x 102cm. Ashishishe (c. 1856?1923), known as Curly (or Curley), was a Crow scout in the United States Army during the Sioux Wars, best known for having been one of the few survivors on the United States side at the Battle of Little Bighorn. He did not fight in the battle, but watched from a distance, and was the first to report the defeat of General Custer's 7th Cavalry Regiment.
Brian Tozer (b.1944). Crow Chief, Plenty Coups, stoneware clay ceramic tile adhesive, painted wood frame, 133 x 102cm. Tozer was commissioned to undertake a series of Native American sculptures, for the UK and Canadian market in 1999/2000. The clay was fired to 1240 degrees and then decorated, often with natural products. Plenty Coups was the principal chief of the Crow Nation and a visionary leader. He allied the Crow with the whites when the war for the West was being fought, because the Sioux and Cheyenne were the traditional enemies of the Crow. Plenty Coups had also experienced a vision when he was very young that non-Native American people would ultimately take control of his homeland, so he always felt that cooperation would benefit his people much more than opposition.
