5th-3rd century BC. A Gnathian ceramic blackware juglet with pedestal base, ribbed bulbous body, waisted neck and everted rim; the applied handle formed as a Herakles knot; band of ochre slip to the shoulder, white line between pellets to the neck. 168 grams, 11cm tall (4 1/4"). From the estate of a North Country collector, acquired over a 30 year period from the early 1970s. The Herakles knot is found as a decorative motif, notably on jewellery, from the Mycenaean period, but became especially popular from the fourth century BC. According to the Roman writer Pliny, the decorative device of the Herakles knot could cure wounds, and its popularity in Hellenistic jewelry suggests that it was thought to have the power to avert evil. Its symbolism is closely connected with marriage, and the knot that tied the bride's garment and was untied by the groom; this custom is the likely origin of the phrase “tying the knot.”
