Attributed to Minton, a pair of mid Victorian majolica vases, each with sea green caryatid handles above mask terminals on ochre yellow ground ovoid bodies between classically decorated turquoise ground waisted necks and socles, the paintings after Raphael's tondos in the Stanze de la Signatura of the Apostolic Palace, Rome carried out from 1509-11 depicting amorini holding inscribed tablets flanking seated figures, Thomas Goode paper label, 55cm (21.5 in) high (2) (D) Literature: For an illustration of similar caryatid handles and the painting on the Prometheus vase, see, Karmason and Stacke, 'Majolica', page 40 Other Notes: The attribution to Minton for the present vases might be projected further to suggesting that the caryatid handles are redolent of the shapes and designs of Pierre Emile Jeannest (1813-1857). The Fitzwilliam Museum holds a ewer with a caryatid handle and the Victoria and Albert Museum a wine cooler. Thomas Allen (1831-1915) might be suggested as the painter of these vases on the basis of his work on the Prometheus vase. Allen worked with Thomas Kirkby (1824-1901) for a time at Minton's and both ceramic artists did work for the universal exhibitions in the mid 19th century. A caryatid head has been glued back onto one and the other now has a wooden socle
