Tang Dynasty Horse Statue, 618-906 AD A large ceramic statue of a horse, head turned to the left and looking down, mouth open and eras pricked. Saddle to the back with decorated saddle cloth with floral motif, harness decorated with red roundels. Short, plaited tail, right hoof raised. Pigment to the surface with details to the face and saddle. The horse was important to the Emperors and elite members of society of the Tang dynasty a dynasty of prosperity, military expansion and artistic achievement. As sculpture, they have timeless appeal, their stylised arched necks, pricked ears and heavy torsos exude confidence, distinction and charm. The breed is believed to be the famous and almost mythical Ferghana horse, known as Tian Ma, or ‘heavenly horse,’ one of China’s earliest major imports originating in the Dayuan area of Central Asia. Such animals were the reserve of the elite and as such they required models of them to act as substitutes in the afterlife. The Han Emperor, Wudi, wrote a poem on the horses, such was their fame:‘The heavenly horses have arrive from the Western frontier. Having travelled 10,000 li, they arrive with great virtueWith loyal spirit, they defeat foreign nations. And crossing the deserts all barbarians succumb in their wake!’These horses were larger, faster and stronger than any horse in China and they finally became symbols of power and prestige. With careful training and masterful training, these horses soon became the favoured breed in China. At that time in China, the more horses you owned the higher your status. The terracotta statues of horses found in tombs have flaring nostrils, pricked ears, powerful legs and strong necks. Probably these statues were the first to depict the Ferghana horse in Chinese art. Wearing long robes falling to the feet in a series of folds, the right hand held in abhya mudra, meaning ‘fear not’, the left hand held in the varadha mudra meaning ‘fulfilment of all wishes.’ Pigment to the nimbus, face, and robes. A ceramic head of a female, possibly a goddess, with hair in a series of waves to the the brow, pulled back into a bun and held in place by a wide band. Delicate features to the face. Mounted on a custom made stand. Ex. Collection: Livingston Ludlow Biddle [USA, 1877 - 1959]. Acquired in 1903 while touring the Mediterranean on board Alcedo, at the time the largest private yacht in the world belonging to his uncle George Drexel. Biddle was descended from a wealthy Philadelphia banking family and devoted much of his time to the arts. His son helped create the National Endowment for the Arts [NEA]. The glamorous steam and sailing yacht Alcedo was built in Glasgow Scotland in 1895. She was 300 foot long and required 100 crew to operate. She was enlisted into the US Navy in 1917 and became the first American ship to be sunk by enemy action during World War 1 with the loss of 21 souls.
