Letizia': a patinated bronze figure of a cloaked maiden by Gio Ponti, modelled with musical instruments and vessels to her feet, unsigned, a ceramic version of the same model illustrated in Ugo La Pietra, Gio Ponti, Milan, 1995. p. 30, cat. no. 67 61cm (24in) See Sotheby's 20th Century Design, 31st May 2007, lot 252 for a similar example Gio Ponti (1891 - 1979) A poet, painter, artist and architect, Ponti is referred to as the "Godfather of Italy's post war design renaissance." He trained as an architect; his most famous building being the Pirelli Tower in Milan built in 1958. However Ponti also designed furniture, flatware, vases, sculptures, set designs at La Scala and was editor of the influential Domus magazine. His daughter Lisa wrote that he could regularly work an 18 hour day. His sculpture Letizia meaning "Happiness" was a design from the 1920s and is typical of his more lyrical style of that era.
Harold Stanley 'Jim' Ede, (British, 1895-1990), a ceramic plaque, the blue glazed rectangular plaque with incised abstract design, paper note verso reads; 'For our Mary Rose, a decorative plaque to commemorate so much for so long, from Jim' 31 x 23½cm (12 x 9in) Harold Stanley ('Jim') Ede was born on 7 April 1895. He attended the Leys School in Cambridge, studied painting at Newlyn Art School and, after service in the First World War, attended the Slade School of Art in London. In the 1920s and 30s he was a curator at the Tate Gallery in London. Jim and Helen Ede moved to Cambridge in 1956 and renovated four derelict cottages to create Kettle's Yard; a home for them, and thanks to his friendship with artists such as Ben and Winifred Nicholson and Alfred Wallis, a home for his remarkable collection of paintings and sculptures.
