1 large medium 19th century "Pate Sur Pate" pinecone button. This is an gorgeous example from the Minton's factory in England in the late 19th or early 20th centuries. Pate sur Pate is a technique that is rare on buttons meaning Paste on Paste. It is a technique whereby the artists would apply multiple layers of slip (liquid clay) to an unfired, unglazed base. There are examples that have been called this technique but recently the classification committee of the NBS has decided to declassify these example as Pate Sur Pate, however we will tell you that our ceramic experts would disagree with that determination as the French examples we are talking about certainly appear to be of the same technique. You can see one of those examples in this auction of the ladies head. Whatever the determination is this example is considered such and even any of the others that the NBS say are not are still wonderful and hard examples of beautiful porcelain work from the late 19th century.
