Protective lion figure; China, 20th century.Wucai-style ceramic.Size: 34 x 13 x 19 cmFigure of a male protective lion made in wucai (literally, 'five-coloured') style ceramics, a style created in the Ming dynasty and widely used in China since then. It is characterised by only some of the motifs being executed in underglaze cobalt-blue, while the rest of the decoration is applied already on the glaze. In addition, black glaze is added for the outlines, in early times covered with a translucent green glaze to fix it. Here, however, the wucai is adapted to sculpture, so that the colours are used for ornamentation rather than for drawing motifs.
