A hollow ceramic vessel, biconical in shape, intended to be filled with explosive liquid and a wick, and used as a hand grenade; the body decorated with an incised double teardrop design with raised teardrops, the upper end with a wide circular rim enclosing the narrow mouth. 710 grams, 14.5cm (5 3/4"). Fine condition, large chip to rear. A very rare type. From a private collection, North London, UK; acquired from a London Arms & Armour dealer in the 1950s. See W. Arendt 'Irene Granaten des 13-14. An assemblage of Viking silver 'hack', with a ceramic pot comprising: two finger-rings with faux-twist detailing to the bezel; a penannular braided ring; eight D-section ingots; seven rectangular-section ingot fragments; two thick round-section rods; a narrow tapering round-section rod; eight Northern denier coins, one pierced at edge and most showing the characteristic 'peck' marks seen on coins that have passed through Viking hands; a squat ceramic pot with everted rim. 369 grams total, pot: 87mm diameter (3 1/2"). Property of a London businessman, from his grandfather's collection formed after World War II; thence by descent 1972. See Blackburn, M. 10th-11th century AD. A complex bronze ornament comprising: one larger and one smaller dress pin each with round-section tapering shaft and cruciform finial of four lobes, the larger with conical bosses and the smaller with incised ring-and-dot motifs; a pair of trapezoidal openwork plaques each with conical bosses, the plaque attached to the smaller pin modified after loss of the upper lobe; three substantial double-link chains attached to the rear of each plaque, extending to the central waisted plaque with tremolier ladder pattern motif; the chains supporting a variety of embellishments and pendants comprising: two lengths of coiled rod, a disc pendant with hook, a small conical bell, two larger conical bells, a spherical rumbler bell, a silver disc fragment, a Roman(?) hand pendant in the 'figa' gesture, two flat-section triangular pendants, a fragment of green-glazed ceramic, Baltic workmanship. 684 grams total, 87cm overall (34 1/4"). 1st-3rd century AD. A large carved steatite(?) dice, cuboid in form with chamfered corners, ring-and-dot markings arranged 1:5, 2:4, 3:6. 27 grams, 22mm (1").[No Reserve] Fine condition. 2nd-3rd century AD. A high bodied ceramic oil lamp with volute scrolls to the nozzle, chamfered shoulder with small filling hole, shoulder and body decorated with small dots all over; maker's mark to the base in the shape of an olive branch. 220 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). [No Reserve] Fine condition. Ex Evans collection; formerly in an old Suffolk collection; acquired in the 1960s; thence by decent.
1st-3rd century AD. .A mixed group of discoid ceramic theatre tokens or seals with impressed motifs from intaglio matrices, many with a void formed by the organic thread, comprising: six profile busts; a pair of standing figures (Romulus and Remus?); a horseman with drawn sword; an ibex with long horns; a tripod with amphora and cockerel. 18 grams total, 17-21mm (3/4").[10] Very fine condition. Ex Hiller collection; by descent, 1976.

A mixed group of stone tools including blades, awls, cores, cobbles and scrapers, some marked with their findspots: 'Isterød', 'Langtved', 'Ågårde', 'Læsø', 'Bromsnæs', 'Gunnerød', 'Skelebjorg', 'Stasevang', 'Maglemøse Vedb[y]', 'Vellerup', 'Vedb[y]', 'Trygg Å'. 'Tostr. Norregård' and others indistinct; an oyster shell; a later fragment of ceramic tile; a piece of coal; a piece of quartz, a piece of mineralised wood. 3.1 kg total, 2.5-12.5cm (1 - 5"). Ming Dynasty, 1368-1644 AD. A buff ceramic statuette of a sturdy horse standing on a rectangular base with bridle and harness, saddle and crupper; hollow to the underside, tail curled to one rear leg, slot to rear of neck. 2.3 kg, 30cm (11 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1995. Finely modelled, repaired.

Later 15th century AD. A squat white-glazed ceramic jar and lid with blue flower to the upper face, segmented sides with alternating geometric and plant motifs. 137 grams, 70mm (2 3/4"). Fine condition. Property of a London gentleman; salvaged by Oxford University; sunk off the coast of Hoi An in about 1490 AD. Annamese Hoi An pottery was made in what is now modern day Vietnam, in the kilns at Chu Dou, being the largest and most important kilns in the fourteenth to fifteenth century in kingdom of Annam. The box and cover is typical of the ware being produced having quick flowing painting.
Song Dynasty, 960-1127 AD. A cream-glazed ceramic granary jar with bird and rosette appliques and undulating dragon to the neck, above a row of guardian figure appliques; bulb with pie crust rim and four loops below; conical lid with flange rim, three loops and bird above. 2.7 kg, 59.5cm (23 1/2").[No Reserve] Fine condition. Ex Cheuk family collection, London, UK; acquired prior to 2004.
3rd millennium BC. A ceramic figure of a nude female, seated with legs projecting forward and slightly bent at the knees; arms crossed over the breasts, large necklace of three strings with rosette pendants; face with pinched nose and applied eyes and mouth; rosettes around the face and with tri-lobed headdress above. 79 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Fine condition, one arm and feet absent. From an important London collection, acquired in the 1990s.

A mixed ceramic group comprising: an administrative document from the ancient Sumerian city of Isin, with cuneiform text in four columns; a group of four ceramic seals from a large clay bulla with cylinder seal impressions three showing a contest scene between animals and heroes and one the sun god Utu in his boat. 295 grams total, document: 84mm (3 1/2"). Fair condition, document repaired. From an old Adelaide, Australian collection, formed in the 1960-1970s. Cf. Aruz, J. Art of the First Cities. A ceramic jug with bulbous body, tapering tubular neck and flared mouth, one of two applied ribbed strap handles to the shoulder, painted circumferential bands of diaper and guilloche ornament to the neck, swastika and quatrefoil panels to the shoulder, red base and handle. 2.9 kg, 30cm (11 3/4"). Fine condition; one handle absent, rim chipped, body repaired. From the collection of a North London gentleman; acquired in the 1980s.
2nd millennium BC. A ceramic jug with biconvex body, flared base, bell-shaped shoulder, baluster and funicular mouth; twisted round-section handle to the shoulder; bands of painted geometric and floral designs. 1.3 kg, 25.5cm (10").
