Teatro La Fenice in Venice is one of the most famous theatres in Europe. In December 1836 the theatre was destroyed by fire, but quickly rebuilt with its doors opening once more on 26 December 1837 Among the many world premiers staged at la Fenice have been Rigoletto, La Traviata, Simon Boccanegra, The RakeÂ’s Progress and The Turn of the Screw. -1

Sullivan’, 8 Albert Mansions, SW, 4 September 1873, to Mr Ryan excusing for not having replied earlier owing to having only just returned from the Festival at Birmingham, ‘Regarding your article merely as a piece of literary work, to me it read most admirable as it was. What it might have been with all the emmendations you speak I cannot say, but I think it could hardly be improved. [Edward] Dicey told me last that although it was a musical notice he had read it! and he spoke very highly of it. It is hardly becoming of me to say what I feel with regard to its lauditory tones, but you will not, I hope, mind my expressing the great gratification I felt that you should appreciate my work so highly and express that appreciation such warm tones and with so much kindly feeling’, a little dust-soiling, 4 pp., 8vo, together with an original Vanity Fair colour lithograph of Sullivan by Ape, 1874, plus accompanying letterpress leaf.
