ELIZABETH CATLETT (AMERICAN-MEXICAN 1915-2012)Nino Papalero,1947lithograph full sheet measuring 33 x 25.4 cm (13 x 10 in.)signed lower right, inscribed with edition 40/31 lower leftLOT NOTESThe foremother by subsequent generations. Residing in the United States and Mexico, Catlett produced an unparalleled body of politically charged and compelling graphic and sculptural works. Catletts body of work was influenced from her grandmothers who told her stories of slavery, from her mother she head about the realities of life in the slums. These stories shaped her understanding of what life was like in the United States for black people, aware of the exploitation that black people experienced created the groundwork for her artistic vision. In 1942 Catlett moved to New York City, she became immersed in the milieu of the City’s leading African American artist community. Later Catlett worked as a promotion director and instructor of sculpture and sewing at the George Washing Carver People’s School. While working at the night school, Catlett became seemingly aware of the way her students’ lives were shaped by their social and economical circumstances. This deepened her awareness of the privileges she was afforded. Catlett, who was deeply moved by the young women, noted these women with the term, “cultural hunger”. Inspired by her students, Catlett was awarded with the Julius Rosenwald Fund Fellowship, to produce a series of work [prints, paintings and sculpture] on the subject of “The Negro Woman”. The series was completed in Mexico, after Catlett moved to Mexico City to establish a permanent residence. The series, “The Negro Woman” was completed in 1947, consisting of fifteen linocuts, creating a chronicle of oppression, resistance and survival of African American women. Around the same time period, Catlett created series and sculptures depicting mother-and-child themes. It is evident in Catlett’s body of work that she was interested in showing the social and economical struggles people of color endured.CONDITIONUnframed, the work appears in good condition. Cy Twombly (1929 Lexington - 2011 Rome)Untitled from 'Hommage à Picasso', offset lithograph in colours on paper, sheet size 76 cm x 56 cm, monogrammed, dated 73, numbered 54/150, slightly creasedProvenance: Private collection, HanoverLiterature: Cat. rais. Bastian 40In his idiosyncratic works, Twombly combines collages with frenetic abstract brushstrokes and elements from scientific drawing. The American painter was born in Lexington, Virginia in 1928. At the age of 14 be began attending painting classes and lectures by the Spanish artist Pierre Daura, through whom he first came into contact with European art. He later continued his education at the Art Students League, where he met Robert Rauschenberg. Twombly developed an expressive, abstract style early on, in whose gestural brushwork he sought to express his own physical and psychological presence. In the 1970s, he began incorporating paper collages into his work, mixing painting mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, and pastel to create different surfaces. The portfolio ''Hommage à Picasso'' consisted of 68 prints in various techniques.
Henry Moore (1889 Castleford/Yorkshire - 1986 Much Hadham) (F)'Figures with Sky Background I', Farblithografie auf Bütten, 46 cm x 45 cm Blattmaß, 27 cm x 27,5 cm Plattenmaß, signiert, 30/50 nummeriert, verso betiteltProvenienz: Privatsammlung HannoverHenry Moore wurde am 30. Henry Moore (1889 Castleford/Yorkshire - 1986 Much Hadham) (F)'Figures with Sky Background I', lithograph in colours on laid paper, sheet size 46 cm x 45 cm, plate size 27 cm x 27.5 cm, signed, numbered 30/50, titled on the reverseProvenance: Private collection, HanoverHenry Moore was born on 30th July 1898 in Castleford in West Yorkshire, England, and was one of the most important English sculptors of the 20th century. Moore, who is best known for his large-scale sculptures, also left behind a considerable graphic oeuvre. Many of his prints are to be understood as two-dimensional preliminary studies for his works in marble or bronze or draw upon the unmistakable formal language of his sculptural works. The central theme of his work was the human body, predominantly the female. During numerous stays in Paris, the artist established contacts with the avant garde, especially with Constantin Brancusi and Pablo Picasso. Despite his rise to become one of the most successful British artists of the postwar period, Moore, who grew up as the seventh of eight children in a miner's family, lived very frugally, so that most of his money went into funding the Henry Moore Foundation, which to this day supports education and promotion in the field of art.
Serge Poliakoff (1906 Moskau - 1969 Paris) (F)'Composition rose', Farblithografie auf Arches, 1959, 54,2 cm x 72,5 cm Blattmaß, 45 cm x 60 cm Plattenmaß, signiert, 30/75 nummeriert, montiert, mittig fachmännisch restaurierte StelleLiteratur: Wvz. 'Composition rose', lithograph in colours on Arches, 1959, 54.2 cm x 72.5 cm sheet size, 45 cm x 60 cm plate size, signed, numbered 30/75, mounted, centre with expertly restored spotLiterature: Cat. rais. Poliakoff/Schneider 22The Russian painter Serge Poliakoff was born in Moscow on 8th January 1900. He is considered an important representative of the ''École de Paris'' and of Modern Abstract Painting in France. In 1917 he fled the Russian Revolution and arrived in Paris, where he studied at the Academies Forchot and de la Grande Chaumière as of 1929. In the late 1930s he discovered geometric abstraction. Poliakoff developed his own pictorial language and a unique form of abstract painting by directly juxtaposing clear geometric forms with contrasting colours, to the exclusion of linear elements. The work ''Composition rose'' impressively illustrates Poliakoff's pictorial language. The combination and superimposition of relatively few primary colours in earth-toned nuances already hints at his tendency toward monochrome designs in his late work.
