STANDIDGE (PRINTERS), MID-19TH CENTURY PROCESSION OF EMPEROR MAXIMILIAN I hand-coloured lithograph, heightened with gold, with margins 37cm x 54; 14 1/2in x 21 1/4(8) These eight lithographs printed by Standidge & Co. circa 1850, form part of the series representing the Triumphal Procession of Emperor Maximilian of Austria, 1526. The Triumphal Procession (in German, Triumphzug) was commissioned by the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I to be executed in woodcut in the 16th century. This massive commission was initially printed from over 130 separate wood blocks. Approximately 54 metres (177 ft) long, it was one of the largest friezes ever printed and was designed to be pasted around the walls in city halls and palaces to create a decorative frieze expressing the Emperor`s power and magnificence. This lithographic interpretation captures the rich iconography of the original woodcuts.
