GREAT GLOVE FIGHTBritish Double Crown (20" x 30"); Country-of-OriginVery Fine- on Linen Williamson Films Ltd., 1900We believe this may be the earliest known boxing-themed movie poster known to exist. It corresponds to the short film, GREAT GLOVE FIGHT (1900), produced in the UK by James Williamson, one of the few early British pioneers who made motion pictures from 1897-1912 through his company, Williamson Films Ltd. This is an exceptionally rare and historic British country-of-origin poster for the early boxing film "Great Glove Fight," produced by Williamson Films Ltd. circa 1900. Stafford & Co. Ltd. printed this remarkable stone lithograph, featuring two boxers in a ring, accentuated by a woman's presence, the British and American flags, and the Williamson Films Ltd. logo in the lower right corner. The poster has been linen-backed and minimally restored to stabilize small chips and tears along the edges, as well as a vertical tear at the top border that extends into the background, much of which remains visible due to the European method of restoration. We utilized the following source as part of our research: "The Beginnings of the Cinema in England 1894-1901 - Volume 5 1900" by John Barnes; page 251; GREAT GLOVE FIGHT (N [for News Film]) 150 ft.; "Between Frank Lewis, champion of South of England, and Fred Gausden, champion of Sussex. Gausden beaten in three rounds. "Continuation, showing the two combatants receiving the attention of their seconds, and a bookmaker paying up his calls. 80 ft." Ref: Williamson catalogue (September 1902), p. 9, no. 106.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Productions, 1919This exquisite U.S. "Style A" one-sheet poster, a stone lithograph, showcases the artwork of The Landlady (Mrs. Stuart Robinson) reading a letter from her son at the front to his "girl," The Stenographer (Helen Ferguson). Both women envision him in their thoughts, as suggested by his image behind them. This beautiful stone lithograph poster is unrestored and exhibits slight waviness, minor stains, and discoloration along the borders, with small chips on the lower right edge. The WWI-themed silent film war drama The Lost Battalion was released in 1919 by W.H. Productions and directed by Burton L. King. It is a 1919 war film about units of the 77th Infantry Division (the "Lost Battalion") penetrating deep into the Argonne Forest of France during World War I. It features Major Charles W. Whittlesey and a number of the actual soldiers from the 77th, who portrayed themselves in the film. The film was remade in 2001 by Russell Mulcahy. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, September 12th. WENN VOLKER STREITENGerman Poster (58" x 86"); Stone Litho, Country-of-OriginVery Fine+ Folded; Artwork by R. Wolfth Apollo, 1915This beautiful country-of-origin German poster is a stone lithograph and features artwork by R. Wolfth. Printed on two separate sheets, the image depicts friends Henri Toussaint from France and Frederik Faber from Germany as they find themselves on opposite sides of a rising conflict. Folded as originally issued, this example appears to be unused and exhibits only light signs of wear along portions of a few outer edges. The colors are fresh and vibrant without any signs of fading.Wenn Volker Streiten (When People Argue) is a German silent film anti-war drama released in Germany in 1915 and directed by Cesare Lupo. This was one of the first anti-war films of the early cinema, together with "Maudite soit la guerre (1915) by Alfred Machin. This film was already filmed in the first months of World War I and, as such, is regarded as an especially evocative pacifistic pamphlet. Despite a certain amount of bias towards the behavior of the German troops, the film staunchly advocated its pacifist ideals and showed audiences the horrors of war in original tinted colors. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, September 13th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. DOLLYOpera Poster (29.75" x 46"); Stone LithoFine- on Linen Choudens Ed. Paris. Clerice,. Paris, 1922This beautiful stone lithograph poster was professionally linen-backed and restored in the "European Style" with only the most minute touch-up to the center of the poster within the woman's dress. There were some creases and a small tear that were flattened when the poster was backed and some of these items are noticeable upon close inspection. The poster exhibits areas of waviness, as it was backed onto a thin linen stock. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, September 13th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. * JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), THE PORTRAIT OF SIR WALTER SCOTT limited edition lithograph on paper, signed and numbered 59/100 mounted, framed and under glass image size 40cm x 30cm, overall size 71cm x 59cm Note 1: This lithograph was one of a series commissioned by Canongate Publishers to be used as book cover designs for their Pocket Classics series in 2001. This image by Bellany was the cover for ‘Two Stories’ by Sir Walter Scott. Writer Sir Ian Rankin revealed in a Guardian article in 2007 that he had "a John Bellany limited edition print showing Sir Walter Scott" hanging above his mantlepiece. Note 2: Collector demand has never been higher for the work of John Bellany and numerous examples have been sold in recent months by both McTear's and others at ever more impressive prices. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 29th May 2022 "The Finnon Smoker" by Bellany sold for £80,000 (hammer) and in the same sale, "Bass Rock Fable" (a 76 x 61cm unframed oil) sold for £12,000 (hammer). In our 21st August 2022 auction, lot 137 "The Newspaper Hat" (a 61 x 51cm oil) sold for £9500 (hammer). "Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficult to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 25th May 2023, lot 282, "Restless Wave" a 90 x 90cm oil (by Bellany) sold for £9000 (hammer) and in our auction of 9th November, lot 92, "Harbour" a 90 x 120cm oil by Bellany sold for £11000 (hammer). The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).
