Red Grooms (b 1937) Amer, Hand colored lithograph. Elaborate work of art imploding with abstract expressionism featuring nude figures, buildings, police officers, golfers, fire fighters, artwork and more. Condition flaws, see images. Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Red Grooms is known for whimsical sculptural tableaux and paintings, especially with circus themes. He works with all kinds of materials including paper, plaster, wood, found objects, and cardboard. About his work, he said he has "a giddy sense of reality." He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, and the New School of Social Research in New York. In Provincetown, Massachusetts, he was a student of Abstract Expressionist Hans Hoffman. In New York, he was a participant in "Happenings" or performance art, along with Jim Dine, Allan Kaprow, and Claes Oldenburg. For Grooms, this activity was an outgrowth of his interest in the pageantry of the circus, something that has intrigued him throughout his life. A successful full-time artist and resident of New York City, he has held visiting professorships in several universities. In 1999, he completed his largest project, which was The Tennessee Foxtrot Carousel in full scale in his home town of Nashville's Riverfront Park near the Grand Ole Opry House. The piece is decorated with scenes from Nashville's history and includes sculpted seats, painted dioramas and heroic figures such as Andrew Jackson and Davey Crockett. Overall size: 31 x 27 in. Titled, "Dusk", lithograph with hand coloring, numbered 32/100, pencil signed Toko Shinoda. Born in Dalian, Manchuria, Toko Shinoda practiced calligraphy from the age of six. In 1940, Shinoda had her first solo exhibition at Kyukyodo Gallery, and began working on abstract paintings in sumi by 1945. Shinoda traveled the United States from 1956 to 1958, and came into contact with the works of Jackson Pollock, which left a deep impression on her. She moved beyond traditional calligraphy towards an expressive, abstract style. During her time in the United States, she had a number of exhibitions, which helped to make her name. Her works were bought by several high-profile collectors. Shinoda also became involved in the abstract expressionist movement of the time. She died at the age of 108 in Japan. Swiss-born painter and graphic artist, born into a family of musicians, he himself was a violinist. A well-known Southwest painter, print-maker and gallery owner, he did finely rendered, etching like portraits of time-worn Native Americans. His goal was to depict the dignity of his subjects. He was born in Sioux City Iowa and raised in a small home overlooking the Missouri River. He studied art and writing at the Unviersity of Northern Iowa andtaught high school in Iowa. In the late 1960s, he moved to Colorado and opened Breckenridge Galleries. After living briefly in Taos and Colorado, he opened the Howell Gallery in Santa Fe.
