The Spooner lithograph depicts the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own). This was a cavalry regiment of the British Army, raised in 1759 and notable for its participation in the Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War. The regiment was amalgamated with the 21st Lancers to form the 17th/21st Lancers in 1922. Known as the 'Death or Glory Boys', their cap badge is a skull and crossbones. After further amalgamation with the 16th/5th The Queen's Royal Lancers in 1993, they now form the Queen's Royal Lancers. The first caricature shows two officers in dress uniform; one is a Life Guard or Dragoon, the other a Hussar. They are both drunkenly déshabillé and are presumably returning from the Waterloo banquet at Apsley House. The second item illustrates a scene on a high-road passing through a village. The velocipede rider is being attacked by a vet and a blacksmith, both of whom regard mechanical transport as a threat to their livelihoods. The vet squirts a large syringe into the mouth of the dandy whilst the blacksmith smashes the velocipede with a large hammer. In the middle distance, another rider is attacked by a man with a pitchfork.
