Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (French/Swiss, 1859-1923),'Le Journal: La Traite des Blanches',colour lithograph, 1899,printed by Charles Verneau,68 x 58 cm (reduced)*This poster was advertising the sensational novel 'White Slavery'. It depicts a pimp with three of his victims, one is arguing for her freedom, one has accepted her fate, whilst one is in despair. This is an pre-censored, smaller format version of the poster, identical to the larger except bearing additional text on an extended sofa and an additional frame to the image. In later versions, Steinlen was obliged to cover up the exposure. CONDITION REPORT: Two significant tears to edges, some losses to bottom left corner, text along top removed. Fold lines. Mounted by two small squares of tape to bottom corners and a larger section along the rear to a backing board.Examples of this edition with bare breasts and additional text can be seen at auction in America in the late '90s/early noughties by Sothebys, Butterfields etc.

Her mother was Françoise Gilot, who Picasso met in 1943 when she was 21 and he was 61. They had two children together, Claude in 1947 and Paloma in 1949. She left Picasso in 1953. This sensitive portrait was drawn when Picasso returned for Christmas to Vallurais in 1952 and is a delightful and very personal example of his lithography from this period, perhaps his best period in this medium.
