It was invented by the French artist, Jean Dubuffet, to describe art such as graffiti or naïve art which is made outside the academic tradition of fine art.Dubuffet made a large collection of Art Brut, and in 1948 founded the Compagnie de l’Art Brut to promote its study. His collection is now housed in a museum - La Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne, Switzerland. Another major collection, using the term Outsider Art, is the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Art Collection, now on loan to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland.Condition report: All unframed and with a little discolouration and dirt. § Robert Tavener, RE (British, 1920-2004) London Park No. 2 signed in pencil lower right "Robert Tavener" and inscribed "Artist's proof" lithograph 54 x 74cm (21 x 29in) Robert Tavener was born in Hampstead, London. After six years of war service, he attended Hornsey College of Art in 1946. He studied lithography and gained his art teacher's diploma from London University. In 1953 he took up a teaching post at Eastbourne College of Art and Design and later became Vice-Principal until his retirement in 1980. Tavener also taught at St Martin's School of Art for one day a week. He did much illustration work as well as commissions for organisations such as Shell, the BBC, London Transport and Penguin Books. He was a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers and had thirty-five solo exhibitions during his lifetime. Fine.
§ Henry Cliffe (British, 1919-1983) Standing Figure signed lower right "Henry Cliffe '59" and inscribed "Proof" lithograph 75 x 52cm (29 x 20in) Other Notes: Henry Cliffe was born in Scarborough in 1919. Whilst serving in the Army during the Second World War, he met the painter, William Scott, and after the war he enrolled as a student at the Bath Academy of Art where Scott was teaching. He later joined the teaching staff at Bath alongside William Scott, Peter Lanyon, Terry Frost, Bryan Winter, Howard Hodgkin and Adrian Heath. Cliffe enjoyed a long and influential career at Bath as well as exhibiting his own work. He exhibited his work in the British Pavilion at the 1954 Venice Biennale. His first one-man exhibition was at the Redfern Gallery in London in 1956. Fine.
§ Walter Hoyle (British, 1922-2000) St John's, Cambridge signed lower right "Walter Hoyle" lithograph 58 x 58cm (23 x 23in) Walter Hoyle was a painter and printmaker. He was born in Lancashire and studied at Beckenham School of Art from 1938. He then gained a place at the Royal College of Art in 1940 where he studied under Edward Bawden. They became close friends and Hoyle later moved to Great Bardfield to live and work alongside Bawden. He held many exhibitions and his work is in collections such as the Tate. He taught at the Cambridge School of Art, placing great emphasis on printmaking, from 1964 until he retired in 1985 Missing glass. Paper slightly crinkled.

We now have the pleasure to inform you that we have managed to obtain the print we mentioned at the time of your call- the 'Oblong' Spooner Plate of the 88th Regiment- we can offer it to you at the same figure we quoted for the 18th Royal Irish Regiment, namely the moderate price of £4.10.0. It is a mint state impression in perfect condition, and has large margins. Again the lower label states the previous sizes etc. (2)
*Henri Mirande (1877-1955), 'Scorching'. An original colour lithograph by Fortier et Marotte, depicting two children racing down a village street in their battered home-made car, a puppy balanced on the rear, the resulting image being quite surreal. This is one of Mirande's celebrated humorous works. Good condition, though somewhat browned, and with a short (3cm) vertical abrasion in the middle of the top edge (not affecting the main image). Artist's signature lower right-hand corner. Framed, mounted and glazed, published March 1906, Sheet size 45 x 53cm (1)
Seemann (Berthold). Narrative of the Voyage of H.M.S. Herald during the Years 1845-51, under the Command of Captain Henry Kellett, R.N., C.B.;Being a Circumnavigation of the Globe, and Three Cruizes to the Arctic Regions in search of Sir John Franklin, 2 volumes, 1st edition, 1853, two tinted lithograph plates, folding colour map (all linen backed along with titles), bound without half titles and advertisements, some offsetting, spotting and marginal toning, later red cloth, spines faded, 8vo Hill 1546; Howes S271; Sabin 78867. Seemann was the naturalist aboard the Herald, which set out to measure the hydrography of the Pacific Ocean and subsequently searched for the lost Franklin Arctic expedition. (2)

Wilson, publisher), Dunedin from Little Paisley, circa 1850, lithograph with contemporary hand colouring, 205 x 280 mm, mounted, framed and glazed Rare.Otago was founded as a Free Church of Scotland settlement, but most of the settlers came to escape hardship or advance themselves economically rather than for religious reasons. The weaving industry in Paisley was in recession through much of the 1840s, and many left there for New Zealand, particularly Otago and this resulted in part of Dunedin became known as Little Paisley. One of the scarcer titles relating to the Franklin rescue efforts. The volume consists of extracts from a journal kept in 1849. (1)
Kane (Elisha Kent). The U.S. Grinnell Expedition in Search of Sir John Franklin, A Personal Narrative, 1st edition, New York: Harper & Brothers, 1853, 552,[8]pp., 3 maps & charts (including one folding), 5 mezzotint plates (including frontispiece), 8 tinted lithograph plates, one wood engraved plate and numerous wood engraved vignettes to text, 8 pages of adverts at rear, scattered spotting throughout, original cloth gilt, joints and head & foot of spine strengthened & repaired, some refurbishing to spine and corners, light cracking to joints, 8vo Sabin 36998. Very rare first edition of the classic of arctic exploration, more often found in the re-issue of 1854. 4,000 copies were originally printed and bound awaiting distribution in Harper's warehouse when a fire destroyed the building and majority of copies on December 10, 1853. The plates were stored in a vault and escaped damage. Harper's quickly printed a new edition bearing the 1854 date. Only a few copies of the 1853 edition had been issued before the fire. (1)
