Neben den Bonnard- und Maillol-Ausgaben die bedeutsamste Adaption des antiken Hirtenromans. Angeregt durch den Verleger Tériade entschloss sich Marc Chagall den Roman zu illustrieren. 1952 und 1954 bereiste er mit seiner Frau Valentina Griechenland und brachte zahlreiche Skizzen und Gouachen zurück. Er brauchte vier Jahre von 1957 bis 1960, um die Gouachen in Lithographien umzusetzen, und die Meisterschaft der Brüder Mourlot war nötig, um die Steindrucke mit bis zu 26 Farben pro Blatt angemessen zu drucken. Der Stoff des antiken Romans kam der Vorstellungswelt Chagalls sehr entgegen, Daphnis und Chloé ist bekanntlich die Geschichte zweier ausgesetzter Kinder, die zuerst von einem Schaf und einer Ziege genährt werden. Aufgefunden von Hirten entdecken sie im ersten Frühling eine merkwürdige Sehnsucht, der sie keinen Namen und keinen Sinn zu geben wissen. Während des Sommers wächst ihr gegenseitiges aber unerfülltes Verlangen ohne dass sie für ihr Leiden Hilfe finden. Herbst und Winter bringen Trennung. Zuerst wird Daphnis entführt, später Chloé, doch kommen sie wieder zusammen. Sie erfahren aber jetzt auch von dem Hirten Philetas den Namen ihrer Krankheit: Eros, die Liebe. Seine Ratschläge können sie noch nicht begreifen. Der kommende Frühling lässt Zuneigung und Verlangen wieder wachsen. Erst nachdem Lykainion Daphnis in der Liebe unterwiesen und er mit Hilfe der Nymphen einen Schatz findet, kann er offiziell um Chloé werben. Nachdem auch beide ihre leiblichen Väter gefunden haben, kommt es zum glücklichen Ende und zum Hochzeitsfest, nicht im Palast sondern in der Hütte der Hirten. Die Liebeserzählung in der griechischen Landschaft im Wechsel der Jahreszeiten wird von Marc Chagall umgesetzt in ein unvergleichliches Meisterwerk der Buchkunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Outer frame dimensions: 36x53 cm. Excellent preservation. Antonio Manganaro (Manfredonia, 1842 – Naples, 1920) was a painter and caricaturist, as well as a drawing professor. He was considered on par with the two other major caricaturists of his time, Errico Colonna and Melchiorre Delfico. In 1885, he obtained the position of drawing professor at the Giambattista Della Porta Technical School in Naples. He left behind many original albums of caricatures, including I Cinquecento del I Parlamento italiano, Ottanta consiglieri municipali del Palazzo San Giacomo, Consiglieri provinciali di Napoli, Contemporanei, etc.

PHOTOGRAPHY Two 19th Century mother of pearl fronted photo albums with ornamental clasps alongside a 1920s photographic travel scrap book diary. Album 1: 29 carte-de-visites, one small religious lithograph and a christmas greetings card with additional space for further photographs. There is some historic damp related wear to the mounts inside. There is no missing mother of pearl and the clasps are secure. 24 x 15cm. Album 2: 50 carte-de-visites with spade for an additional 50 more to the reverse. There is no missing mother of pearl, some age related wear to the spine and some vert de gris to the clasps. 24 x 16cm. The scrapbook consists of various photographs of resorts alongside portraits of a young couple with poetic verses, locations and dates between 1920 and 1921. There is a touching verse 'I climb the mosey (sic) bank of the glade, my love awaiteth me in the shade' alongside a picture of a gentleman lay on the grass. (3)
Jean Cocteau (French, 1889-1963). Autograph Letter Signed. Addressed to "Bonalumi" of Ventimille [Ventimiglia], 15 September 1956, handwritten in blue ink on Santo-Sospir letterhead, signed "Jean" with trademark star. In the letter, Cocteau explains that he would rather do justice to "Desbordes" [Jean Desbordes, Cocteau's romantic partner 1926-1933] than painter Bernard Buffet - whose reputation is sliding. Cocteau says he has recently re-read Desbordes' work "J'Adore". The letter is well-preserved & bright, verso edges with tape & slight surface wear, complete with handwritten postal envelope. Together with Tête de Feu [Fire Head], undated, colour lithograph on Arches paper bearing watermark, signed on the stone, "JC" stamp l.r., numbered 90/200 l.l., 65.5 x 50cm, vibrant colours, wide margins, some pale spotting, top edge verso with two strips of tape residue, plus certificate from Édouard Dermit as legatee of Cocteau's estate at Milly-la-Forêt, 22 December 1991 (2) NB.
