Hasler & Cie, Basle, c. 1840, forty fine hand-coloured lithograph plates by Danzer after Hieronymus Hess (1799-1850), heightened with gum arabic, tissue guard to each, and gold, text in German, French and English, occ. scattered spotting, title page missing, a.e.g., orig. blindstamped cloth gilt, rubbed and somewhat worn to spine with upper cover near detached, faded to edges, 4to. The first edition of this particular Dance of Death sequence by the Basel artist Hieronymus Hess (1799-1850), which follows the well-known version by Holbein with two exceptions, plate 35 has a Chinese figure instead of a Turkish one, and plate 38 depicts the artist Hess himself.
