'Les Maîtres de l'Affiche', 3rd volume, (in French), Chaix, Paris, 1898, complete with the 48 coloured lithograph numbered plates (no's. 97-144) plus the four bonus plates, in original Art Nouveau style green cloth pictorial folio binding, designed by Paul Berthon, 15¾in x 12¼in, edges /corner slightly knocked and with scuff marks on dark green border - see photographs,some of the plates with minor foxing and some other finger marks etc but generally good, no rips / tears etc.Maîtres de l'Affiche or 'Masters of the Poster' refers to 256 coloured lithographic plates that were issued as a subscription collection in Paris, France in the late 19thC. The collection, reproduced from the original works of ninety-seven artists in a smaller more accessible format, was put together by Jules Chéret, recognised as 'the father of poster art'. The prints were sold in packages of four and delivered monthly to subscribers. On sixteen occasions during the selling period between December 1895 through November 1900, the monthly package included a bonus of a specially created lithograph. Subscribers who subsequently wished to have their plates bound were offered a hardcover binding in a specially-designed folio by Paul Berton. This is the third such folio of a five volume series.

The Book of Antelopes, 4 vol. in 2, first edition, 100 fine hand-coloured lithograph plates by Smit, after Smit and Wolf, illustrations, some pencil underlining and annotations, contemporary blue half morocco, gilt, t.e.g., [Mendelssohn II, p.292; Nissen ZBI 3784; Wood, p.558, "fine illustrations"], 4to, 1894-1900.⁂ Lovely copy of this superb monograph. Bookplate of Sir Giles Loder, Bart., and loosely inserted A.L.s, from G.K[enneth].Whitehead to "Dear Sir Giles" dated 1963, asking to buy this set from him for "say, £50 to £75" and quoting recent auction prices. Whitehead (1913-2004) was a leading authority on deer, a founding member of the British Deer Society and author of several books on the subject.

Turkey.- MacFarlane (Charles) Constantinople in 1828. A Residence of Sixteen Months in the Turkish Capital and Provinces, first edition, half-title, 5 lithograph plates (3 hand-coloured, one in sepia, one double-page), with 7pp. A.L.s. to 'My dear Hawes' loosely inserted, contemporary signature of Elizabeth Blackett to title, later half morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, [Atabey 741; Blackmer 1047], 4to, Saunders and Otley, 1829.⁂ The letter mentions his forthcoming "(not official) mission" to Turkey, his "old friend Henry Marshall's recent work on Ceylon" and the work Marshall has done "to improve the condition of the soldiers, and to do away with the torture and brutality which disgraced the Army & the whole nation."

Interesting collection of copper plate engravings, including Front and Profile Portrait of the Women of Port de Francais (one of the new Discoveries of M. la Perouse approx 12.5 x 19 cms; the next entitled 'Widows of Florida scattering their hair upon their husbands tombs approx 22 w x 17 h cms engraved by B.Picart circa 1721 and The Manner of burying Kings and Priests approx 20 x 31.5 cms circa 1721 and Women of Florida who having lost their husbands in the Wars implore assistance from King Hermophradites by Picard circa 1721. This lot includes some interesting lithograph including A Chinese Prince of the Present Manchoo Tartar Race circa 1802 James Chapman approx 12 x 9 cms framed and glazed, Chon-Man-I-Case and Otto Half Chief approx 29 x 40 cms framed and glazed and a copy of Le Petit Journal Les Denier's Peaux-Rouges with Chief Joseph (c1840-1904) the American Nez Perce Indian chief, depicting the death of Chief Joseph on Colville Reservation in the state of Washington. This lot includes a charming watercolour depicting a nobleman dated 1934, approx 20 x 29 cms.
