Discovery, Spring Travelling, 1876 with 6 flags, one or two light spots, folds, 600 x 275 mmQty: (1)Footnote: Rare Arctic broadside commemorating the achievements of the 1875-76 Admiralty expedition, led by Sir George Strong Nares in an attempt to reach the North Pole via Smith Sound. The sledging party, commanded by Albert Hastings Markham reached a new farthest north record of 83º 20´ 26´, only surpassed by Norwegian explorer Fridtjoft Nansen in 1895. Although the expedition failed to reach the Pole, there were other achievements including extensive explorations of the coasts of Greenland and Ellesmere Island, and photographic documentation of the indigenous population and topography.

(ca. 1930s). lithograph, depicting a Handley Page Type 42 aircraft flying in a night sky over a control tower, a route map in the background, numbered lower r.h. margin A/X/51, 98 x 60cm within frame, 105 x 66.5cm overall, framed and glazed.Imperial Airways was the early British commercial long-range airline operating from 1924 to 1939, principally serving routes to South Africa, India and the Far East, including Australia, Malaya and Hong Kong. The airline merged into the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) in 1939.
