Original vintage lithograph poster Potato Field issued by the Empire Marketing Board - EMB to promote produce of dominions of Great Britain. Moody image of peasants gathering potatoes in the field by Anthony Raine-Barker. This poster is missing the text at the bottom of the poster. Anthony Raine (A.R.) Barker (1880–1963) was a British artist. He attended Framlingham College, Suffolk. He initially trained as an architect, winning, in 1909, the RIBA Soane Medallion for design and, in 1910, the RIBA Certificate of Honourable mention. A.R. Barker became a painter in the traditional school of English watercolour as well as an engraver, lithographer and etcher. He exhibited over many years at the Royal Academy and examples of his work are owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. In the 1920s he was a leading member of the Senefelder Club. He published two children's books illustrated with his own wood-cuts, The Fairyland Express (1925) and Hidden Gold (1926). he Empire Marketing Board was formed in May 1926 by the Colonial Secretary Leo Amery to promote intra-Empire trade and to persuade consumers to 'Buy Empire'. It was established as a substitute for tariff reform and protectionist legislation and this is why it was eventually abolished in 1933, as a system of imperial preference replaced free trade. During its brief existence, the Empire Marketing Board was unsuccessful in raising Britain's imports of products from the Empire. Acceptable condition, trimmed on margins, restored tears and creasing, light staining. Country of issue: UK, designer: Anthony Raine Barker, size (cm): 99x150, year of printing: 1930s.

Original vintage stone lithograph advertising poster for gentleman's hats Mossant. Fun design by Leonetto Cappiello showing a row of elegantly claded arms holding out Mossant hats in greeting on a bright yellow background. Leonetto Cappiello (9 April 1875 – 2 February 1942) was an Italian and French poster art designer and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called 'the father of modern advertising' because of his innovation in poster design. The early advertising poster was characterized by a painterly quality as evidenced by early poster artists Jules Cheret, Alfred Choubrac and Hugo D'Alesi. Cappiello, like other young artists, worked in a way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early norm. Acceptable condition, water staining on top right corner, tear and punched dents, creasing, backed on old linen. Country of issue: France, designer: Leonetto Cappiello, size (cm): 159x117.5, year of printing: 1938.

Sketched caricatures of the four drivers and their signatures appear in the margin. The print is framed under glass (possibly the original frame) and is in good clean condition with good colour. William Callow RWS (1812-1908)"Rue de la Grosse Horloge, Rouen - Morning"Signed and dated 1857, watercolour, 53cm by 74.5cmExhibited: The Old Watercolour Society / Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours, 1857Private Collection, UKFootnote: William Callow arrived in Paris in 1829, the year after Richard Parkes Bonington's death. He quickly came to know Thomas Shotter Boys and other important members of Bonington's circle - and remained an influential admirer of Bonington's work. This exhibition piece from 1857, evocatively capturing Rouen's ancient buildings and the bustling market stalls, recalls Bonington's depiction of the same view, published as a lithograph in 1824.Condition report: Some general staining to the sheet although it is possible that the artist has used a certain amount of tinting for atmospheric effect. There is a subtle demi-loon-shaped minor crease that looks to have been tended to, top edge centre approximately 2cm in width. Odd sporadic and tiny sized foxing spot evident within the sky. Other further odd tiny dint within sheet again evident within the sky for example above the left-hand side finial of left-hand side gate of the arch. The blue of sed gateway is somewhat rubbed particularly within the upper reach. Colour depth in general down, blue and greens in particular. When viewed at an angle there is a slightly opaque sheen to some of the elements of architecture, upper elements of architecture painted using terracotta tones, no evidence of cockling. Not examined out of the frame.

C.App.7, p325The Tate Gallery published several editions of this lithograph between 1967 and 1988, reproducing the original painting in their collection and this is from the edition of 3000 published in 1988 (copy 3M488). This impression is one of 25 produced to raise funds for the American Indian Program and is inscribed signed in support of the Artists for American Indian Programs, Princess Pale Moon, American Indian Heritage Foundation in pencil on the reverse of the right panel.WHAAM! is the quintessential work of Pop Art, an arresting and instantly recognizable image by one of the major exponents of the genre, taking inspiration from popular and commercial culture and challenging the artistic conventions of the 1960s by elevating the humble disposable comic strip to the status of a serious work of art.Lichtenstein appreciated comic strips for 'their strength, aggressiveness and energy'. For WHAAM!, he adapted an illustration in the 1962 comic book All-American Men of War, which showed an American fighter jet destroying an enemy plane. Lichtenstein's interpretation is simplified with bold primary colours outlined in black and economical use of narrative, with the onomatopoeic lettering WHAAM! placed for maximum impact. The artist also employed his trademark Ben-day dots which are carefully spaced and overlapped to simulate colour variations and create form, emulating the process by which comic books are printed. The original composition was conceived as one panel. However, Lichtenstein decided that the work would have more impact as a diptych, separating the action from its explosive consequence, whilst maintaining a visual connection via the smoke trail.Lichtenstein's military service during World War II and the looming spectre of the Vietnam war influenced his choice of subject, which could be regarded as a comment on the folly of war. He later remarked 'At that time I was interested in anything I could use as a subject that was emotionally strong – usually love, war, or something that was highly-charged and emotional subject matter'. The translation of a mass-produced commercial comic book image into the main subject for an artwork was considered a bold move, but for Lichtenstein the cartoon style was the perfect vehicle to challenge traditional opinions on what constitutes art and to confound the expectations of the viewer. Although the comic strip was perhaps a lowly-regarded genre, it had a place in popular culture, expressing and influencing the American dream, and WHAAM! sits firmly within this tradition. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
