Michelangelo Grigoletti (1801-1870) - The Doge Francesco Foscari Condemning his Son to Banishment, signed and dated 1842, oil on canvas, 180 x 254cm, in the original frame and the lithograph by Michele Fanoli after Grigoletti (2) Recorded in Joanna Philips' notebook, c1845: "At the bottom of the Drawing Room is a picture painted by commission at Venice in 1842 by Michel Angelo Grigoletti. The subject is the Doges Foscari condemning his son to banishment". The picture was removed to the Staircase Hall in November 1907. It is supported by two acid-free hinges to the upper edge. There is a central vertical crease. Two 2cm vertical tear from the upper right edge, 24.5cm in from the right edge. Two pinholes to the upper left corner have opened slightly and now measure approx 3mm in diameter each. Crease at lower left corner. Some overall light staining.

The left edge is supported with three acid-free hinges. Very small crease across upper and lower right corners but otherwise this poster appears to be in good condition with no obvious damage/loss/restoration.

Note: Cranston Bogle received a prize of £50 for designing this poster to promote evening classes organised by the London County Council. He was one of 800 entries, and had just left Bradford College of Arts and Crafts.
