§ Feliks Topolski RA (1907-1989) Englandoffset lithograph, unframed116 x 46cmBorn in Warsaw, Poland, in 1907, Feliks Topolski became renowned during his lifetime for his myriad depictions of British pageantry. Initially travelling to London in 1935 to document the state funeral of King George V, Topolski was immediately drawn to bustling city life and in 1958 became a naturalised British citizen.Following a number of Royal commissions, including a large-scale mural produced to celebrate the Queen’s coronation, the present lot, which depicts two guardsmen, was produced in 1977 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Intended to be part of a window display for Selfridge’s, Topolski produced 500 of these lithographic prints, however, the project was abandoned before exhibition. Fortunately, several prescient employees rescued around 100 of these posters bound for destruction – it is believed that around 25 examples have survived. Some very minor handling creases around the edges, but overall in very nice, clean condition.
