AFTER W** S** HEDGES (Fl.c.1835 -?) FRONT VIEW OF THE BRITISH GUIANA PUBLIC BUILDINGS, DEMERARA Tinted lithograph with hand colouring, published by Day & Haghe 36 x 59.5cm.; with a bound volume of editions of the `Royal Gazette [of the United Colony of Demerary & Essequebo]` for the year 1828, much wormed and worn (2) ++ The lithograph with some fading and discoloration of the paper
•EDWARD BAWDEN, CBE, RA (1903-1989) BOROUGH Colour lithograph from the linocut, 1967, from the `Six London Markets` set, published by Curwen Prints, signed, inscribed Borough and further inscribed out of series 6/8 (the edition was 75) 45.5 x 61cm. Provenance: Purchased by the owners from the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, July 20th 1968 (15gns). The Royal Academy receipt and a signed piece of note paper from Bawden (at Great Bardfield) accompanies the lot. * This suite of prints has a curious history from a technical point of view. The prints, commissioned by Curwen Prints in 1967, were devised as linocuts but were transferred to plates to be printed as offset lithographs. Precise colour matching was an obsession for Bawden and the technicians at the Curwen Studio, notably Stanley Jones, were skilled at working to the artist's exacting standards. None of the `Six London Markets` exists as a linocut but `The Floral Hall, Covent Garden`(c.1967) - not part of this series - was indeed produced as a linocut. Confusion arises from this distinction. ++ Foxing
