* HANNAH FRANK (SCOTTISH 1908 - 2008),WRAP THY FORM IN A MANTLE GREY (1941)lithograph on paper, signed in pencil, titled and datedimage size 39cm x 29cm, sheet size 48cm x 35cm, overall size 53cm x 39cmFramed and under glass.Note: Since McTear's first promoted Hannah Frank's spectacular work in 2011, the prices for her ever more rare signed prints have continued to rise with many current prices being more than five times higher than those achieved barely a decade ago. The latest UK auction record figure for a single signed lithograph was most recently achieved (twice) in our auction on 24th October 2021 and now stands at £820 (hammer). Note 2: Hannah Frank was the last living link to the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau period. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow University in the 1920`s and her haunting pen and ink drawings have been exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Glasgow Institute. A series of lithographs of some of her 90 drawings were made in the 1960's and again in the 1980's to satisfy the demand for her work after exhibitions in Edinburgh and Glasgow. Only a relatively few of these prints were hand signed (in pencil) by Hannah and it's understood that only one print was ever editioned (numbered) in a conventional manner. A major exhibition at the Royal Glasgow Institute in 2006 brought her work to a new generation of admirers and received considerable press coverage. Her work toured for five years in the UK and the USA culminating in an exhibition at Glasgow University which opened on her 100th birthday 23rd August 2008. After her death, she was awarded a posthumous Honorary Doctorate at Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council`s Lord Provost`s Award For Art (2009).

James Cauty (British, b. 1956) Dead Dad 1, 2007 Lithograph poster, part of the Operation Magic Kingdom series Unsigned, open edition 70 x 48 cm (27 x 19 in) Over a diverse and productive career Cauty has distinguished himself as a musician, record producer, artist and cultural provocateur through fusions of high art, low art and popularist mediums to spectacular effect. As a teenager Cauty drew the intricate multi-million selling Lord of the Rings poster for British retailer Athena. With Alex Patterson as The Orb and with Bill Drummond as The KLF and the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu, Cauty co-wrote and produced a string of global top ten hits. As The K-Foundation, Cauty and Drummond staged a series of seminal actions including the 1994 K Foundation Art Award for Worst Artist of the Year and the K Foundation Burn A Million Quid. From experimental sonic weapons (the Advanced Acoustic Armaments), to anti-Iraq war postage stamps (Stamps of Mass Destruction), and model making (Riot In A Jam Jar and the Aftermath Dislocation Principle) Cauty’s work combines dissent, cultural subversion and gleeful level of high humour. His roguish and voluble approach has earned him a cult following for work that remains radical, responsive and darkly comical. He produces work that draws on and responds to contemporary culture, sampling it and selling it back as recorded realities. In 2013 Cauty completed The Aftermath Dislocation Principle (ADP), a vast 1:87 scale-model landscape (equivalent to 1 sq mile in miniature) which has been completely looted, destroyed, burnt and is devoid of life apart from 3000 or so model police that attend this apocalyptic aftermath. In 2015 the ADP was installed in Banksy’s Dismaland in Weston Super Mare. This lot is also sold subject to Artists Resale Rights, details of which can be found in our Terms and Conditions.

Marc Chagall (1887 Vitebsk - 1985 Saint-Paul-de-Vence) (F)'Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat', colour lithograph on Velin, 1952, 68 cm x 49.5 cm panel dimension, 74.5 cm x 53.5 cm inner passepartout dimension, signed, Epreuves d'artiste numbered, signed in print, dated 1949, slightly wavy, slightly browned paper, literature: WVZ. Solier VI, CS 4.As early as around 1910-1914, Marc Chagall broke away from Impressionism, which he had learned at the St. Petersburg Academy, during his stay in Paris. In the process, he integrated stylistic features of Cubism and colourful Fauvism, which were just emerging through Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, into his painting. After returning to Russia, Marc Chagall developed his own style from elements of Russian folk art and the Jewish religious experience of his childhood. Via Berlin, the artist emigrated to Paris, where he lived and worked from 1920 onwards. Chagall's work is characterised by a colourful combination of symbolic pictorial motifs. In addition to paintings, he produced an extensive graphic oeuvre and designed stained glass windows as well as ceramics and sculpture. From 1950 onwards, the artist lived in Vence, which is only about 30 kilometres from the municipality of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the Côte d ́Azur via Nice and is the title of this colour lithograph.
