London 1948 Olympic Games official poster,designed by Walter Herz (1909-1965), the largest version, double-crown, 30 by 20in., featuring Big Ben and Parliament, Discobolus and the Olympic Rings, colour lithograph published by McCorquodale & Co Ltd, professionally restored, mounted, framed & glazed, 90 by 65cm.Traditionally the Olympic poster is selected by a design competition. But as the 1948 Olympic Games had to be organised with such haste, there was no time. The choice of poster was decided by the Executive Committee after a handful of designs had been submitted. The official report for the 1948 Games informs us that the poster was printed in three sizes, double crown 20 by 30in. (50,000), crown 15 by 20in. (25,000) and double royal 25 by 40in. (25,000).

[Flors Jesters Hood or a Picture of the strange year of 1637, when a Fool would out-do another, the Rich would be without goods, and the Wise without brain], published Amsterdam, circa 1720, uncoloured engraving, old folds, very slight overall toning. 415 x 525 mm, together with Doyle (John), Auction Extraordinary, published T. McLean, 1838, uncoloured lithograph, trimmed to neatline, some adhesion and abrasion to one margin, 370 x 275 mm The first described item is a rare satirical print on Tulipmania, which was one of the biggest financial bubbles of the 17th century. Tulip bulbs were bought and sold for more than the annual income of some workers, and financial ruin became a reality for many traders and investors. In a tent in the shape of a fools cap, some traders are weighing up gold while in the background, people are standing in line to buy the bulbs whilst Flora departs on a donkey. On the left side of the print, a winged devil with an hour glass, is holding a rod with an attached fools cap over the heads of some investors who watch on as a grower/seller is throwing away tulip bulbs. Some peasants are carrying away soil and bulbs. On the right side, three peasants with a basket full of bulbs have just arrived to offer their goods. *Lewin (Frederic George, 1861-1933). A collection of original Charles Dickens artwork and ephemera, all illustrations for Pickwick Papers, produced for the textile manufacturer and supplier Sam Weller of Pickwick Works, Bradford, circa 1914 - 1962, containing 25 original pen and ink cartoon designs for advertising calendars, mostly signed, many with printer's annotations and corrections, and titled with quotations from Pickwick Papers, many card-mounted, each 40 x 28 cm (15.75 x 11ins) or similar, together with approximately 170 calendars (covering the years 1914-1961 with only three gaps), the majority hand-coloured, some corrected proofs, along with the printer's copy of an Everyman's Library edition of Pickwick Papers (with the calendar quotes listed and marked for each year at the front of the volume), also 11 hand-coloured cut-out lithographed figures from Pickwick Papers, each double-glazed, 26 x 13cm or similar, plus further related and duplicated items, including 13 framed colour lithograph prints of Lewi's illustrations to Pickwick Papers The humorous illustrator Frederick George Lewin worked for the Bristol Magpie and Bristol Evening Post and contributed to Punch magazine (1902-08). One of his main publishers was E.W. Savory Ltd. of Bristol, who produced these advertising calendars for the Yorkshire textile company Sam Weller, appropriately using characters from Pickwick Papers. Lewin was a member of the Royal West of England Academy and the Bristol Savage Club, and he wrote and illustrated Rhymes of Ye Olde Sign Boards (1911) and others. In 1912 Lewin provided the illustrations for Characters from Dickens. His light-hearted drawings of Dickensian characters also featured on cigarette cards and postcards. (3 cartons)
