Much of the last two years of the composer's life was spent on the composition and subsequent revision of Elijah: after the Birmingham premiere of Elijah in August 1846 Mendelssohn began to rework the score extensively (as he did with all his major compositions), regarding the actual first performance as only a step in the process of arriving at its definitive final form. This version was premiered at Exeter Hall, London in April 1847.
