A porcelain glockenspiel was made in 1736 for the Japanese Palace by J.J. Kaendler and his assistants, though the tone quality left something to be desired. The new glockenspiel provided an opportunity to demonstrate the technical and design mastery required to produce a melodic instrument. The metal sheets have minor undulations but are generally in plane and in a good condition. The paint layers have suffered minor losses on both works but are stable overall. The picture with the musician has been partially cleaned to remove the varnish, this has caused wear to the paint layer in some areas. The scene with the physician has a thick layer of varnish which is even, glossy and slightly yellowed. There are small areas of overpaint in localised areas.
