LEONARD LESTER 1870-1952 CALIFORNIA signed, inscribed `Alpine California` and dated `1930` pastel 23.5cm x 30; 9 1/4in x 11 3/4 Leonard Lester was born in Penrith, Cumbria. In 1889 he emigrated to Canada with his family and in the early 1890s moved to the United States, living for a short time in Kansas before settling in Pasadena, California. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, National Academy of Design, Art Students League of New York and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as well as a short time in Munich and Dresden. Between 1907 and 1916 he taught art at the Raja Yoga School in Cuba. In 1916 he returned to California where is lived for the rest of his life. Initially living in Point Loma, for health reasons he moved to the drier climate at Alpine, near San Diego, in about 1929. For many years he painted in the mountains of this area producing ethereal and atmospheric paintings and drawings of the area. His works are in the collection of the San Diego Museum.
A pair of Dresden porcelain monkey band figures and two further Continental porcelain figures (af). CONDITION REPORT: Dresden cellist - bow is broken and the end section is missing, general wear. Dresden conductor - both hands broken, a break to his left arm although the section is present and crude restoration to the baton in his right hand. Dresden piper - the tops of the bagpipes are missing, also the lower section and tips of all his left hand fingers, small chip to his coat. Female figure - very minor loss to the flowers.

A Berlin porcelain plaque of a drinking scene circa 1860, depicting three seated men drinking and a clergyman, surrounded by wine barrels, signed L. Knoeller Dresden to the bottom left, titled `Angeheitert` after Ed. Grützner in black ink, impressed KPM and other impressed marks to reverse, in a later frame, 12¼ x 10in. (31 x 25.5cm.). .
A late-Meissen or Dresden porcelain chamberstick with floral nozzle and twig form handle with floral surmount, the bowl decorated with three oval panels depicting courting couples in garden landscapes, on a turquoise ground, blue crossed swords to base and impressed `3`, 4¾in. (12cm.) diameter.
