Oil on canvas by Gustave Weigand, signed in the lower right. Replaced stretcher. European landscape, possibly of Holland. Born in Bremen, Germany, landscape painter Gustav Adolph Wiegand studied at the Dresden Royal Academy and the Royal Academy in Berlin before coming to New York where he studied with William Merritt Chase and Eugen Bracht. He exhibited extensively throughout the U.S., including shows at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Salons of America. Large German painting Hermann Emil Pohle (1863-1914) The oil on canvas depicts a beautiful landscape scene of a couple working in the field, with the children sitting enjoying the views off to the right. In the distant, it appears to be either a house or possibly a church. It is signed "H Pohle" in the lower left. There is also a center plaque with Herman Pohle and his dates. Pohle is remembered as "Hermann Pohle The Younger" because he is the son of landscape painter Hermann Pohle. Pohle was an important history painter who also emerged as a lanscape and portrait painter. Unfortunately Pohle died at the young age of 51 from unexpected heart failure while he was sitting in a "paint box" session. He was chairman of the "Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions" and the "Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help". He had organized the major Düsseldorf exhibitions in 1911 and 1913. Works by him were also exhibited in major art exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden, Munich, St. Louis (USA) or Vienna.
