Ab 1910 regelmäßige Teilnahme an Ausstellungen der Berliner Secession und bei Paul Cassirer. Obgleich er sich öffentlich zu Hitlers Gefolgschaft zählte, erhielt er 1937 Ausstellungsverbot wegen seiner "entarteten Kunst" und wurde 1938 zum Austritt aus der Preussischen Akademie der Künste gezwungen. Mehr als 400 seiner Werke entfernte man aus öffentlichen Sammlungen. Heute wird sein Werk betreut in Güstrow, Ratzeburg und Hamburg.
