Medical History - Bilz (F.E.), The Natural Method of Healing: A New and Complete Guide to Health, F.E. Bilz, Leipzig [1901], two-volume set, iv + 2074pp [over the two parts], pull-out folding anatomical chromolithographic plates throughout, conforming two-page sanatorium advertisement to volume I, period buckram boards tooled as issued with title, author and his sanatorium at Radebeul nr. Dresden, 8voFriedrich Eduard Bilz (1842-1922) became interested in naturopathic medicine while trading as Kolonialwarenladen merchant in his native Arnsdorf. Eventually his erudite interest manifested itself in print with Das Neue Naturheilverfahren (The New Natural Healing) in 1888; a book that became very popular and was translated into twelve lanaguages - of which this lot is the second English edition. By 1895 a health spa was founded at Radebul - soon to become a large sanitarium and colloquially known as Bilzbad - to which was added a wave machine/pool in 1912 after its display at the Dresden International Hygiene Exhibition the previous year. Bliz has sunk into obscurity in recent times, along with his soft-drink Bliz-Brause.
A near pair of Derby figures of the Dresden Shepherd and his companion c.1756-60, he holding a basket of fruit and with a dog at his feet, she picking blooms from her apron full of flowers, a lamb recumbent beside her, both decorated in puce, green and yellow enamels, raised on scrolled bases, small damages and restorations, 25.5cm. Many of the theatrical costumes are relics of TV / Film history (some appearing in TV shows as far back as the 1950's), and also of both professional and amateur stage performances. CONDITION: Condition of most items is good. Theatrical items will show signs of expected wear and tear through use, but most are generally very good. Buyers are reminded for the need to satisfy themselves as to condition of items prior to bidding, as condition on some, will vary. SIZING: Sizing, where present on the garment is given. A Dresden porcelain inkwell with integral stand, foliate and gilt, blue crown and script Dresden mark. Diameter 15 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both the lid and the base are in very good order with no visible damage, no repairs and no restoration. There are no hairline cracks and the gilding is strong.
A Britannicus Dresden China Ironstone draining dish, length 42 cm, and another. CONDITION REPORT: Both draining dishes are in generally good condition with no damage, no repairs and no restoration. The larger dish has numerous old surface scuffs and scratches and there is some rubbing to the gilding. The smaller dish also has some staining and surface scratches but no significant issues.
